FLORENCE, Ala. (November 10, 2023) – The University of North Alabama women's basketball team started with an early lead on Friday inside CB&S Bank Arena, but the University of Denver Pioneers would earn the 67-51 win for UNA's first setback of the season.
The Lions (1-1) led 11-4 shortly after the first media timeout, jumping ahead with a 7-0 run. Denver (1-1) went on to take the lead late in the first quarter and would gradually surge ahead. UNA stayed in striking distance until late in the fourth quarter.
Senior guard
Alexis Callins led the Lions with 10 points, while sophomore guard
Alyssa Clutter powered through with nine points and a team-high six rebounds. Clutter also led the Lions with 35 minutes played.
Three Pioneers scored in double figures, including Vestavia Hills native Emma Smith with 13 points and 11 rebounds for the double-double.
HOW IT HAPPENED
FIRST QUARTER: UNA jumped out to an early 11-4 lead in the first six minutes, but the Pioneers blazed their own trail with a 10-0 run to end the frame, tying the game with 2:20 remaining and taking the lead with under a minute to go. Callins led the Lions with five points in the frame, while Clutter added three rebounds.
SECOND QUARTER: The Lions went down six midway through the second quarter, but pulled within one as
Emma Kate Tittle sank a three-pointer and Clutter made a layup to make it 20-19. Both scores were assisted by
Sara Wohlgemuth, who had three assists for the half. Denver took a 29-21 lead into the locker room.
THIRD QUARTER: The most competitive frame of the game, Denver finished with a slight 17-16 advantage in the third quarter to keep the margin within single digits. Sophomore guard
Rhema Pegues had six points in the quarter, cutting the lead from 12 to eight with back-to-back scores. UNA later pulled within five on an
Emily Jones layup with 2:49 remaining to make it 40-35.
FOURTH QUARTER: Up 46-37 heading into the fourth quarter, Denver hit its stride with 21 points in the final 10:00. The Lions never gave up, going on a 6-0 run to put the pressure back on with 3:09 remaining. Denver would ice the game from there. UNA was led by
Olivia Jones and
Veronaye Charlton with four points each in the frame.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- UNA shot 32.8 percent, going 20-61 from the floor. Denver went 28-60 for 46.7 percent.

The Lions were plagued by turnovers, but still won the turnover battle with a 20-19 advantage. Denver held a 17-14 advantage in points off turnovers.

Both teams scored a high amount of their points in the paint, including 44 from Denver and 36 from UNA.

Clutter, Pegues and Charlton were all perfect at the line, going a combined 7-7.

Callins and Emily Jones each tallied a pair of steals. Olivia Jones added a block.

The Lions hit the road for the first time for a non-conference showdown against SEC foe Missouri. Tipoff is scheduled for Tuesday, Nov. 14 at 7 p.m.
