Men’s Tennis dominates doubles at CCB Invitational

Lions record 20 team wins in Birmingham

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (October 28, 2024) – The University of North Alabama men's tennis team concluded its outing from the CCB Collegiate Invitational this past weekend, leaving with 20 team wins and two bracket champions.

The Lions faced off in singles and doubles action against tournament host Samford, along with nine other programs. This was the program's second trip to Birmingham this season.

From in-state foes like South Alabama and UAB to former Atlantic Sun Conference members Jacksonville State and Kennesaw State, North Alabama competed against familiar opponents and put on a solid performance across the weekend.

Among the 20 team wins, eight came in the doubles portion with senior Nazar Fedoryshyn, junior Lachlan Brain, sophomore Alberto Altur and freshman Samu Dominguez leaving as champions. Fedoryshyn and Altur took home the Red Doubles bracket, and Dominguez and Brain won the Bulldog Doubles bracket. The sophomore tandem of Izan Orgiles and Birtan Duran dropped their opening match but responded with two-straight wins in the consolation bracket.

In singles play, each player secured at least one win for a total of 12 victories. Altur and Fedoryshyn secured a team high of three wins each with Altur finishing as the runner-up in the Red Singles bracket. Dominguez and Duran finished with two singles wins, and Orgiles and Brain rounded out UNA's win total with a win each.

Duran and Brain each played in the Blue Singles bracket, capping the bracket with three wins total. Brain picked up a 6-4, 6-4 win over Harold van Raemdonck of South Alabama in the consolation round, with Duran grabbing his first win in a 6-3, 3-6, 1-0 (7) battle over Kennesaw State's Hugo Salmeron. Duran followed up with a 6-0, 6-4 victory over Louisiana's Mason Landreth in the ensuing round.

Orgiles began his campaign in the Red Singles bracket, opening with a hard-fought, 1-6, 6-4, 7-6 (4) victory over Samford's Sebastian Harrison in the final set. He would fall in the ensuing round to Vasil Dimitrov of Louisiana, also dropping his next two singles contest. Altur also competed in the bracket, starting with a 7-5, 6-1 win over UAB's Hoan Mouret. He defeated Charlie Robin of Belmont, 6-1, 6-2, with Altur advancing to the finals in a 6-4, 6-1 win over Mikolaj Lis of Kennesaw State. Altur fell in the final to Dimitrov in a 6-4, 6-3 decision.

The final singles bracket saw Dominguez and Fedoryshyn combine for five wins. In the Bulldog bracket, Fedoryshyn won his first two matches by beating Olle Noltrop of Southern Miss, 6-2, 3-6, 6-3, and Steven Rice of Tulane, 6-2, 7-5. He fell to the eventual bracket champion in Leonard Tramolay of Louisiana but rebounded with a 6-0, 6-2 win over Belmont's Eli Mizerski in an extra match.

Dominguez started slow with an opening loss, but the freshman responded with two wins in the consolation bracket. He earned his first win in a 2-6, 7-5, 1-0 (8) bout over Jacksonville State's Zach Murphy and grabbed his second in a 6-1, 6-4 win over Kyvan Rietkerk of Kennesaw State. Dominguez made the final in the consolation portion but fell in a battle to Olle Noltrop of Southern Miss, 7-6 (9), 3-6, 1-0 (7).

Heading into doubles, the team of Orgiles and Duran combined to take the Blue Doubles consolation bracket. They dropped their first match, but the two defeated Vincent Vohl and Max Kalinin, 6-2, in the opening consolation round. The second and final consolation match ended with the two winning 6-3 over Hayden Menon and Vitorio Sardinha of Samford.

In the Red Doubles draw, Fedoryshyn and Altur opened with a 6-4 win over Lousiana's William Ribero and Leonard Tramloay. The following round saw the two defeat JB Pickard and Parker Free of Samford, 6-2, before claiming the bracket in a 6-4 triumph over Belmont's Esunge Ndumbe and Charlie Robin.

The Bulldog Doubles bracket began with Dominguez and Brain beating Will Gray and Sebastian Harrison of Samford, 7-5. Another solid effort resulted in a 6-3 victory over Louisiana's Samuel Kyjaci and William Jade, capping the tournament with a 6-3 win over Belmont's Sabi Roi and Nik von Hellens to be crowned bracket champions.
