FLORENCE, Ala. (November 11, 2024) – The United Athletic Conference announced its weekly awards on Monday, naming freshman linebacker Josh Anglin as the league's Freshman of the Week following 14 tackles and 1.5 sacks at Southern Utah.
Anglin's weekly honor is the 12th for UNA this season. Seven of those 12 awards have come in the form of a freshman of the week, as Anglin and rookie running back Jalen Fletcher have three apiece. Defensive lineman Fred Vili is the other.
Anglin, a Buford, Georgia native, tied the FCS school record with 14 tackles at Southern Utah, including five solo hits. The record is now shared with teammate Edwin White Schultz, who had 14 last season against Mercer in the FCS Kickoff game.
Additionally, Anglin added 1.5 sacks and a quarterback hurry, keeping the pressure on the passing game and helping the Lions attempt a second half comeback that brought UNA within a touchdown after being down 31-13 at one point.
Anglin and Fletcher are the first three-time Freshman of the Week winners in league history. Both were named to the Jerry Rice Award Watch List this season, an award that goes to the top freshman in FCS football each season.
UNA leads the UAC in all-time freshman of the week awards with eight over two seasons. Jyheam Ingram won the award last year to become the first winner.
The Lions are on bye week and return to action on Saturday, Nov. 23 at Eastern Kentucky to close the 2024 season.
