Anglin named Jerry Rice Award Finalist

UNA linebacker among top freshmen in FCS football

FLORENCE, Ala. (November 25, 2024) – Following a stellar rookie campaign as a true freshman, North Alabama linebacker Josh Anglin was named a finalist for the prestigious Jerry Rice Award on Monday.

Stats Perform has announced a standout list of 25 finalists for the 2024 Jerry Rice Award, which honors the national freshman player of the year in college football's Division I FCS subdivision.
This list includes 16 offensive players, eight defensive players and one special teams player.

"Josh Anglin has shown the world what we already knew about him last year in recruiting," said UNA head coach Brent Dearmon. "For a true freshman to come in and do what he has done is amazing. Josh will be the face of the Purple Swarm for years to come."

Anglin finishes his rookie season with 81 tackles to rank second on the team. He had 7.0 tackles for loss and 1.5 sacks, as well as two quarterback hurries. The former Mill Creek High School standout forced a fumble against nationally ranked Illinois State and added a pass breakup against UT Martin.

Perhaps his best game came at Southern Utah earlier this month, as Anglin tallied a career-high 14 tackles and 1.5 sacks. Anglin matched the FCS school record for single-game tackles, tying teammate Edwin White Schultz's 14 tackles against Mercer last season.

Anglin, a Georgia native, won three UAC Freshman of the Week awards this season — tied for the most alongside teammate Jalen Fletcher and EKU's Marcus Calwise Jr.

The Rice Award, now in its 14th season, is named after legendary Hall of Fame wide receiver Jerry Rice. Past recipients include NFL standouts Cooper Kupp, Chase Edmonds and Trey Lance, as well as Miami quarterback Cam Ward and Colorado quarterback Shedeur Sanders. All five played their rookie seasons at the FCS level.

To be eligible for the Jerry Rice Award, a player must be considered a freshman by his conference in his first academic year or second if he redshirted as a true freshman.

Earlier this season, Anglin and Fletcher were both named to the Jerry Rice Award watch list. No other school had more than one selection on the 30-player watch list outside of North Alabama.

In 2022, former UNA quarterback Noah Walters was a finalist for the award.

The 2024 Jerry Rice Award recipient will be announced on Dec. 4 and honored at the Stats Perform National Awards Banquet on Jan. 4 in Frisco, Texas.

Other awards at the banquet are the Walter Payton Award (FCS Offensive Player of the Year), Buck Buchanan Award (FCS Defensive Player of the Year), Eddie Robinson Award (FCS Coach of the Year), Urban Edge Network HBCU+ Player of the Year and FedEx Doris Robinson Scholar-Athlete of the Year.
