NOTES
THE MAGIC CONTINUES: The University of North Alabama women's basketball team tipped off the 2024-25 season with a hard-fought, 66-63 triumph on Nov. 4 over the UT Martin Skyhawks. This marked the first win under new head coach Candi Whitaker, and it continued UNA's trend of opening-day wins. The Lions won their fourth-straight season opening game and first road opener since defeating Vanderbilt on Nov. 6, 2018.
THE RETURN OF E.K.: Junior guard Emma Kate Tittle had a strong start in her third season at UNA, going off for 21 points to lead the Lions to the road win over UT Martin. She finished 7-13 from the field and 5-8 from the floor, adding on a career-high three steals in the matchup. The Tuscumbia native was three points shy of tying her career high and registered her highest scoring output since scoring 23 points against Arkansas State on December 8, 2022.
CHARITY MAKES A CASE: Senior guard Charity Gallegos showed no nerves in her first game with the Lions, securing 15 points in her UNA debut against UT Martin. The California native provided a big boost in the second quarter, with all 15 points coming in the period to propel North Alabama to a halftime lead. She also dished out five assists, helping secure the road win against the Skyhawks.
SCOUTING THE LIONS: The University of North Alabama women's basketball team overcame a slow start against UT Martin to bounce back in an opening-day win. The Lions were outscored 18-10 in the first quarter, but a 24-14 advantage in the second quarter flipped the game in UNA's favor going into halftime. North Alabama also outscored UT Martin in the third period, 13-12, and tied in fourth-quarter points with 19 as the Lions held off Skyhawks in the road victory. The Lions held advantages in shooting percentage (46.9 percent to 41.1 percent), three-point percentage (44.4 – 30.0) and free-throw percentage (66.7 – 61.1) in the win.
SCOUTING TENNESSEE TECH: The Golden Eagles were a 16-15 team during the 2023-24 season, finishing 10-8 in the Ohio Valley Conference. The team finished sixth in the conference standings. Tennessee Tech made its conference tournament, opening with a 78-69 triumph over Western Illinois before falling 79-71 to UT Martin in the second round. The Golden Eagles were picked fourth in the preseason OVC poll. Players to watch are graduate guard Peyton Carter and junior Reghan Grimes. Both were named OVC Players to Watch, along with being named to the Preseason All-OVC team. The head coach for Tennessee Tech is Kim Rosamond.
SERIES HISTORY: North Alabama and Tennessee Tech meet for the third official time after playing in the 2023-24 season and once during the 1984-85 season. The meeting last season was the first in almost 40 years. Tennessee Tech won the first meeting, 77-59, then gained a 78-67 win on Dec. 21, 2023 in CB&S Bank Arena.
PRESEASON RANKS: The Atlantic Sun Conference announced its 2024 preseason information for women's basketball on Oct. 10, with North Alabama voted seventh in the media poll and ninth in the coaches' poll.
