Box Score 2 JACKSON, Miss. (February 24, 2024) – The University of North Alabama men's tennis team took down Jackson State 4-1 before sweeping Alcorn 7-0 in a pair of duals over SWAC opponents Saturday in Jackson, Miss.
The Lions improve to 7-3 on the season with the pair of victories. Jackson State falls to 3-5 on the season while Alcorn State moves to 1-7. After an 0-3 start, the Lions have now won seven straight for the best 10 match start since 2017 — the second to last year in Division II.
Match 1 — UNA 4, Jackson State 1
Third flight Birtan Duran and Whitman Davis would begin the day by taking down the JSU number three tandem 6-1, followed by No. 2 Nazar Fedoryshyn and Lachlan Brain winning 6-4 to bring home the first point of the day.
In singles action, Fedoryshyn would begin singles by winning 6-1 in both sets. Duran followed suit, winning his singles matches 6-0 and 6-1, respectively, in the fifth flight. The Tigers would get a point back in the sixth pairing as Carlos Castillo defeated Whitman Davis in straight 6-2 sets.
The Lions earned the victory thanks to top flight Alberto Altur winning over Alejandro Pinilla, 6-1, 6-4. No. 2 Lachlan Brain and No. 4 Izan Orgiles each led their matches when the game was clinched by North Alabama.
Match 2 — UNA 7, Alcorn State 0
The Lions kept momentum going into the second match, with Fedoryshyn and Brain alongside Duran and Davis each taking home the second and third doubles flights by 6-2 finals to put UNA out front, 1-0.
Reigning ASUN Player of the Week Izan Orgiles was the first Lion to finish his set with a win on retirement. Davis took home a straight sweep over Alcorn State's No. 6 with a pair of 6-0 victories. Brain would also win the second flight — 6-2 in each set. Duran took home his pairing 6-2, 6-3 to clinch the match in the fifth flight.
After another retirement in flight three. Top flight player Alberto Altur wrapped up the match with a thrilling victory over Alcorn State's Nikola Kijac, 6-2, 6-7 (4), 10-4 in three sets.
