Men’s Tennis preps for ASUN Championship clash versus Lipscomb

Lions opens postseason play Friday against the Bisons

FORT MYERS, Fla. (April 19, 2024) – The University of North Alabama men's tennis team's postseason begins Friday, April 19, facing off against No. 5 Lipscomb in the Atlantic Sun Conference Championship Tournament opening round at 4 p.m. CT.
 
After a stellar regular season, the stage is set for the Lions with the beginning of postseason play. UNA carries a program-record 15 wins into the matchup with Lipscomb, as North Alabama looks to make a deep run in the third all-time tournament appearance.
 
The Lions head into Friday's matchup after ending the regular season with two home victories over Austin Peay and Bellarmine. UNA swept the Governors, 7-0, before finishing with a 5-2 win over the Knights. The wins gave North Alabama its sixth and seventh home wins, which is a Division I single season program record.
 
The opening round will take place at the FGCU Tennis Complex with first serve scheduled for 4 p.m. CT for fans following along in the Shoals. The winner will advance to the semifinal round set for Saturday, April 20, before ending with the ASUN Championship final Sunday, April 21 at 1 p.m. The final will be broadcasted on ESPN+.

SCOUTING THE LIONS: North Alabama's quest to an ASUN Championship starts in a rematch against the Bisons. The Lions head into the matchup with momentum, with UNA victorious in seven of their previous 10 duals. North Alabama heads into the matchup winning 56 percent of their singles matches, but for doubles, their winning percentage increases to 61.9 percent. Each player has at least three wins on the season in doubles, with sophomore Lachlan Brain leading with 13 wins. Junior Nazar Fedoryshyn and freshman Izan Orgiles follow Brain tied for second with 12 wins. The Lions have at least two wins in singles with five securing 10 or more wins. Freshman Birtan Duran is the leader in singles wins with 15, followed by Orgiles (13), Fedoryshyn (12), Brain (11) and sophomore Federico Scotuzzi (10).
 
SCOUTING THE BISONS: Lipscomb looks to win its second consecutive dual against UNA in regular and postseason play. They enter the tournament at 11-11 with a 5-4 record in the ASUN, entering the postseason on a three-dual win streak. Lipscomb finished the regular season 36-20 in doubles with a 64.3 percent win rate while 68-63 in singles with a 51.9 percent win rate. The Bisons have six players with at least 10 wins in doubles, with Carlos Salas Tulla leading with 12 wins. Sebastian Dominguez and Krzysztof Wetoszka are the top-flight pair for Lipscomb with a 11-6 record. Six players have at least eight wins in singles play with Henrique Ushizima and Carlos Salas Tulla tied with 11. Lipscomb's head coach is Ben Roeser.
 
SERIES HISTORY: This marks the 53rd all-time meeting between North Alabama and Lipscomb and the second all-time in the postseason play. The Bisons lead the all-time series, 29-23, while leading 1-0 in ASUN Tournament matchups. The last matchup resulted in a 4-3 win by Lipscomb on April 6, 2024, fending off a late UNA rally to secure the home win. North Alabama won the first-ever matchup, 3-2, in 1935.
 
POSTSEASON AWARDS: Earlier today, the ASUN announced four postseason awards for UNA, including Orgiles as the ASUN Freshman of the Year. He and Duran were both selected to the all-freshman team, including a unanimous selection for Duran. Brain was named to the all-conference first team.
