FLORENCE, Ala. (September 11, 2024) – University of North Alabama cross country freshman
Brian Bett pulled out the broomstick on Wednesday, as he swept the Atlantic Sun Conference men's weekly awards winning both ASUN Runner of the Week and ASUN Freshman of the Week.
This award comes after Bett won the UNA Invitational this past Saturday with a time of 24:08.14. This is the second week that the ASUN has distributed weekly awards for the season.
Bett won first overall in the UNA Invitational outlasting 81 other runners from eight teams. He lifted the Lions to the second overall spot in the invitational.
Bett debuted at the City Auto Memphis XC Classic where he finished third overall behind two Middle Tennessee Blue Raiders in the four-mile. Bett posted a 19:46.35 time which shattered the previous UNA record for a four-mile by nearly an entire minute.
This is the first North Alabama ASUN Runner of the week since
Talon Pritchard on Oct. 25, 2023 where he won it after the Firehawk Invitational. This is the first UNA Freshman of the week since current sophomore
Brent Lyons on Sept. 13, 2023 which came after the UNA Invitational.
Since joining the ASUN, the Lions have seven total Runner of the Week awards coming from four different runners. North Alabama has claimed four different Freshman of the Week honors from three runners.
The season continues for the Lions this week as they stay in the state of Alabama with the Southern Showcase hosted by Jacksonville State on Friday, Sept. 13 at John Hunt Park in Huntsville.
