Women’s Basketball drops road bout at Austin Peay

Lions continue Tennessee road swing at Lipscomb on Saturday

CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. (January 23, 2025) – The University of North Alabama women's basketball team fell in its first of two road games in Tennessee on Thursday, dropping a 71-60 contest at Austin Peay in Clarksville, Tenn.

The Lions moved to an even 9-9 on the season while 4-3 in ASUN play. Austin Peay's record improves to 10-8 overall and 5-2 in conference play.

UNA was led by the trio of Charity Gallegos, Cameron Jones and Jazzy Klinge, finishing as the top scorers for the Lions. Gallegos had 12 points to cement the guard's 14th double-digit scoring night, while Jones and Klinge registered 10 points each. Jones returned to action for the first time since Bellarmine on Jan. 2, missing the previous five games.

Klinge and freshman Chrishunti Walker secured five rebounds to lead the team, while Gallegos's four assists led all players from both teams. Klinge wrapped up her all-around night with a season-high two steals and two blocks — both leading for the Lions.

The second matchup between the two this season, North Alabama looked to avenge its earlier loss in the return trip in F&M Bank Arena. The Lions had a fast start in the contest offensively, with the Lions shooting 50 percent in the opening quarter (5-10) while 75 percent (3-4) from deep and 100 percent (2-2) from the line. Austin Peay's offense would eventually find its stroke en route to taking the slight 16-15 lead after one.

More of the same came in the second quarter, with both teams shooting over 50 percent through two periods, but the Governors extended its advantage heading into the break. Despite Austin Peay's lead, North Alabama improved on its shooting percentages in the back-and-forth period, jumping from 50 percent to 54.5 percent after 20 minutes. UNA's offense received an early spark from junior Cameron Jones with 10 points at the half, but the Lions had work to do down 36-29.

Austin Peay came out of the halftime break firing on all cylinders, outscoring North Alabama 22-9 in the quarter to extend the lead. UNA had its highest scoring quarter in the fourth with 22 points, but Austin Peay stayed ahead.

The result went in favor of the Governors, but the Lions had one of their most efficient shooting outings of the season. North Alabama finished with 50 percent shooting percentages from the field (22-44) and from three (7-14). It marked the third-highest single-game field goal percentage after bouts against Bethel (51.6 percent) and Bellarmine (50.8) and the second-highest three-point percentage after Bellarmine (58.8).
