Lions crank up power on Queens, 87-62

Fourth quarter power outage delays game, but UNA finds its own spark with season-best shooting night

FLORENCE, Ala. (January 30, 2025) – A power outage blemished an otherwise "flawless" night inside CB&S Bank Arena on Thursday, as North Alabama Women's Basketball brought its own form of electricity with an 87-62 win over Queens on UNA's "Swiftie Night."

With 8:12 to go in the fourth quarter, UNA led 67-47. Sophomore Katie Criswell fouled Aylesha Wade on a shot attempt, sending her to the line. Just as Wade approached the stripe, the power inside CB&S Bank Arena — and most of Florence — shut down.

Members of the athletic department and game officials hustled into "trouble" shoot mode, while the teams cleared the court. The outage began at 7:28 p.m. and lasted for 49 minutes until "sparks flew" again. After a brief warmup period, play resumed.

The outage did not slow down UNA, as the Lions grew the lead from 20 to as high as 27 in the fourth quarter. The Lions were even more powerful in the third quarter, outscoring Queens 31-15 and 53-30 for the second half.

The Lions produced a new season-high in shooting, going 28-54 for 51.9 percent. This marks the fifth time UNA has shot over 50 percent this season. The defense was equally good, limiting Queens to 38.5 percent.

Other keys for the Lions included 28 points off the bench, led by junior Jazzy Klinge with 13 points and nine rebounds for a near double-double. Four others also scored off the bench for 10 players in the book. UNA also scored 23 points off turnovers.

Senior guard Charity Gallegos led the charge with a 20-point performance – her fourth time scoring 20+ points on the season. Gallegos nabbed her 15th double-digit scoring night of the campaign, also totaling four rebounds, two steals and an assist.

Criswell followed her career-high performance against Lipscomb with a 19-point game against the Royals, with Klinge rounding out the scoring leaders with 13 points. Her nine rebounds were also tied the game high.

Graduate Sara Wohlgemuth led the Lions with a season-high six assists, and Gallegos and junior India Howard tied for the team lead with two steals each. Junior Cameron Jones joined Howard and Klinge with a block.

UNA improved to 10-10 overall and back above .500 in conference play at 5-4. Queens dipped to 7-13 and 1-8 in the ASUN.

The Lions continue the weekend from CB&S Bank Arena on Saturday, Feb. 1, taking on the West Georgia Wolves at 5:30 p.m.
