Men’s Tennis travels for Saturday bout at Troy

Lions look for second-straight win over Trojans

TROY, Ala. (January 31, 2025) – The University of North Alabama men's tennis team is set for its third outing of the season Saturday morning, facing the in-state Troy Trojans on the road.

The Lions go for their second win of the new campaign while also looking for the second-straight against the Trojans. Last time out, UNA came back from a point down against Belmont, dominating singles play for a 4-3 triumph against the Bruins.

North Alabama's schedule gets in full swing with the matchup serving as the first of seven duals in the month of February.

First serve is set for 10:30 a.m. at the Lunsford Tennis Complex, with live stats also provided for the match courtesy of StatBroadcast. Fans can also watch the action live via streaming provided by Troy Athletics.

SCOUTING THE LIONS:
In the victory against Belmont last time out, four Lions secured their first singles win of the new year. UNA trailed by a point heading into singles play, but the freshman tandem of Satoru Nakajima and Samu Dominguez got North Alabama its first two points with straight-set victories. Senior Nazar Fedoryshyn followed with a third-straight Lions win from court four. Junior Lachlan Brain secured the deciding win from the top flight.

SCOUTING TROY: The Trojans look to continue rolling after two-straight wins against West Alabama last time out, entering the weekend at 5-3 overall. Troy had a successful 2024 season, finishing fourth in the Sun Belt standings at 19-7 overall with an appearance in the Sun Belt Tournament. The Trojans are led by seventh-year head coach Rolando Vargas.

SERIES HISTORY: Saturday will be the 27th all-time meeting between the two programs. Troy leads the series, 15-11. North Alabama won 4-3 in the previous meeting in 2024, with the victory marking the first since the 1990 season.

FALL 2024 RECAP: North Alabama captured 92 wins in the autumn campaign, competing in five events in preparation of the 2025 season. The month of September saw the Lions win 50 combined matches, taking home 20 wins at the Samford Invitational and 30 wins at the EKU Invite. North Alabama followed with the ITA Regionals and CCB Invitational in October, capturing 13 wins from the ITA tournament and 20 wins from the invite in Birmingham. The Lions had two bracket champions from CCB Invitational in doubles play with senior Nazar Fedoryshyn, junior Lachlan Brain, sophomore Alberto Altur and freshman Samu Dominguez leaving as champions. The UTR Sports College Circuit concluded the fall season, ending with nine UNA wins and Brain securing the singles men's bracket championship.
