NOTES
LAST TIME OUT: The University of North Alabama cross country teams competed in the Gans Creek Classic hosted by the University of Missouri on Friday, Sept. 26 for the second consecutive season. Transfer
Sandra Maiyo notched her second individual crown of the season in Missouri as she finished with a time of 21:21.1 — the second-fastest 6K time in program history. This ranks just behind Emry McKay's 20:51 at the 2006 Division II National Championship in Pensacola, Fla. On the men's side,
Brian Bett shined again at the Gans Creek Classic where he set the all-time 8K record for North Alabama in 2024 with a 23:26.4. This season, Bett finished five spots higher than he did last year in seventh with his 23:49.9 – now the fourth-fastest 8K time in program history. Bett now has the top-five finishes in school history.
COURSE PREVIEW: The course is made up of grass with rolling hills, similar to others courses from this season. About 400m will pass before the first turn comes to pass with a 350m straightaway to finish the race. This course hosted the 2014 SEC Championship and NCAA South Regional Championships as recently as 2017.
THE FIELD: The men will see 20 teams, an upgrade from the 14 a season ago, with some notable names as Vanderbilt, Miami (Fla.), Alabama, Auburn, Georgia Tech and Clemson. ASUN teams Central Arkansas and North Florida join the race with the Lions. For the women, it will be 23 teams which is five more than the 2024 race. It is mostly the same pool of teams, but the women's race adds South Carolina, UAB, Southern Miss and Tulane.
DYNAMIC DUO: Bett and Maiyo have been consistent stars for the 2025 season. The two have racked up two ASUN Runner of the Week awards each already. However, they continue to break records along the way, something Bett all of the 2024 season. Maiyo has broken two records so far this season and boasts two individual crowns after the conclusion of those races. In her first race as a Lion, she earned the third fastest time in a 5K during the UNA Invitational with a 17:35.01; she reset it at the Southern Showcase with a 17:13.6. The sophomore added the second-fastest 6K in program history (see above). After the Gans Creek Classic, Bett boasts all top-five 8K times in school history.
LAST SEASON REWIND: The men finished eighth while the women took home a 16th placement in last season's Crimson Classic race. Bett led all North Alabama runners as a sixth place finisher out of 152 runners. Former Lion Laura Mobely finished 104th to be the highest women's finisher. Current sophomore
Vincent Chepkwony finished with a 24:08.6 for a new personal record at the time.
NEXT RACE: The Crimson Classic closes the regular season ahead of ASUN Championships on Friday, Oct. 31, at River City Nature Park in Jacksonville, Fla.
