Men’s Tennis earns spots in ITA Conference Masters Championships

Lions land 26 wins at the Conference Individual Tournament in Florida; more Lions collect wins in Birmingham

JACKSONVILLE (October 27, 2025) – The University of North Alabama men team tallied 26 wins from Oct. 24-26 at the Conference Individual Tournament in Jacksonville, Fla. and CCB Invitational in Birmingham, Ala. The Lions had players in both events for a split weekend.

The Lions shined in the two tournaments with the highlight coming from action at North Florida. Juniors Alberto Altur and Izan Orgiles qualified for November's ITA Conference Masters Championships after the two won doubles and Altur winning the singles event. Junior Alex Despoja also had great tournament after finishing as the runner-up in singles play.


UNA also had a solid showing in Birmingham with eight wins and a victory in one of the doubles draws. Junior Whitman Davis and sophomore Samu Dominguez claimed the tournament's Red Doubles Draw with two wins.

Over the two tournaments, UNA earned 26 victories in singles and doubles play. All eight Lions gained at least two wins led by Altur with nine total. Juniors Izan Orgiles and Despoja tallied six and five wins, respectively, followed by three from senior Lachlan Brain.


In Birmingham, freshman Benjamin Meyers registered five wins to lead the way. Dominguez added three victories, while Davis and sophomore Satoru Nakajima had two wins each.


In Jacksonville, Altur and Orgiles claimed the doubles bracket with four-straight wins. They opened by defeating Abilene Christian's Tomas Quesada Perez and Dennis Dutine and, later beating Austin Peay's Logan Tomovski and Rohan Loubser. Both were 6-4 final scores. The two continued with another 6-4 triumph over Lipscomb's Facundo Perlov and Henrique Ushizima before claiming the doubles championship in a 6-2, 7-5 victory over Bellarmine's Vineet Ramesh and Matthew Nice.


Altur won singles with five victories, opening with a 6-3, 7-5 win over Austin Peay's Vincent Lu. He followed with a 6-3, 6-3 triumph over Abilene Christian's Luis Joes Nakamine before having to battle teammate Orgiles. Altur defeated Orgiles with a 7-5, 4-6, 10-7 scoreline.


The next match saw Altur soar to the finals with a comeback, 6(5)-7(7), 6-3, 6-1 victory over EKU's Nuno Pinheiro. Altur faced teammate Despoja in the final, winning the singles bracket with a 6-3, 6-3 triumph.


Despite finishing second place, Despoja had a stellar run to the finals. He rallied for a 1-6, 6-3, 12-10 win against Abilene Christian's Tomas Quesada Perez to open his singles campaign. He next defeated FGCU's Tanner Povey in a thrilling battle — 7-6 (7-4), 7-6 (11-9) — before beating teammate Brain in a three-set, 7-5, 4-6, 10-7 thriller. He went on to defeat top-seeded Andreas Scott of North Florida, 3-6, 6-3, 7-6 (9-7) in the semifinal before falling to Altur in the final.


In Birmingham, Davis and Dominguez had two wins enroute to the Red Doubles Draw title. They opened with a bye but came out strong with a 6-1 win over Charleston's Jake Smith and Ram Mude. The duo claimed the bracket in a 6-4 triumph over Louisiana's Darius Balan and Nikola Kolyachev.


Nakajima and Meyers had a solid showing with a second-place finish in the Blue Draw. The two came out with a 6-3 win over Louisiana's Samuel Kyjaci and Leonard Tramolay to start before fending off Samford's Santiago Arredondo and Sandeep Mohandoss in semifinal, 7-6(3). Nakajima and Meyers were defeated in the final by Tulane's Lance Nisbet and Andres Delgadillo, 6-3.

The Lions are set for a two-tournament weekend to close out the fall on Nov. 7-9. Altur and Orgiles will take on the ITA Conference Masters
Championships in San Diego, Calif. with UNA also taking on the Southern Miss Invite in Hattiesburg, Miss.
