Women’s Basketball falls short in 70-58 setback at South Alabama

Alvarado scores 22 points to lead Lions

MOBILE, Ala. (December 14, 2025) – The University of North Alabama women's basketball team dropped a 70-58 contest on Sunday at South Alabama in Mobile, Ala., ending a three-game win streak against in-state opponents this season.

South Alabama (7-3) started with a strong opening quarter before a more-even second period maintained the Jaguars advantage. North Alabama (5-4) answered back with a defensive quarter in the third, but South Alabama held onto the lead heading to the final period. An offensive fourth quarter gave way to the Jaguars.

Senior Alexsandra Alvarado had a prolific scoring display with a game-high 22-point outing. She went 8-14 from the field while going 4-8 from three-point range. Alvarado hit both free-throw attempts while adding four rebounds and one assist to her tally.

Graduate Bukky Akinsola and sophomore Venla Ulander finished second and third in scoring, respectively, with nine and seven points.

Senior Jazzy Klinge totaled a team-high seven rebounds, and Akinsola registered a season-high six assists. Two steals each from Akinsola and freshman Gabby Jackson led the team, and senior India Howard, junior Katie Criswell and sophomore Sofia Ceppellotti had one block to round out UNA's leaders.

South Alabama took a 17-7 lead after the first 10 minutes. The second period saw improved shooting from the Lions with UNA shooting 50 percent from the field (7-14) and one of two attempts made behind the arc.

Alvarado caught fire with nine points in the quarter on 80 percent shooting (4-5). North Alabama's defense also improved from the first, holding the Jaguars to 33.3 percent shooting from the field. South Alabama went into halftime with a 34-23 lead.

Defense was the theme out the break as North Alabama continued to force tough shots against the Jaguars. The Lions held South Alabama to a second-straight 33.3 percent shooting quarter. Despite the shooting struggles, the Jaguars maintained its advantage heading to the fourth, 49-35.

South Alabama would see the contest out in the fourth, but both teams had efficient shooting displays to end the game. The Lions and Jaguars shot 50 percent in the frame with UNA edging South Alabama in quarter scoring, 23-21.
