NEW ORLEANS (February 28, 2025) – The No. 74 University of North Alabama men's tennis team picked up the second victory of its weekend road trip with a 4-0 sweep over the New Orleans Privateers in Louisiana on Friday.
Coming away with a 4-0 sweep over Southern Miss one day prior, North Alabama showed no signs of slowing down en route to a fourth-straight win.
The Privateers made it a battle beginning in the doubles portion, with New Orleans able to take a court from the third flight. UNA secured wins from the top two flights to secure the one-point advantage heading into singles play.
North Alabama followed with three-straight singles wins to take the dual.
The dual saw six different Lions earn a win across singles and doubles play. Sophomore Alberto Altur led with two wins, securing a singles and doubles victory. Doubles partner Izan Orgiles won with Altur, and senior Nazar Fedoryshyn and sophomore Birtan Duran won from the second flight in doubles. Junior Lachlan Brain and freshman Satoru Nakajima each won their respective singles matches.
The day started with action in doubles, as all three matches would be played out to determine the early advantage. New Orleans' Julian Franzmann and David Tesic secured a third-flight, 6-3 win over UNA's Brain and freshman Samu Dominguez, but wins from flights one and two gave North Alabama the 1-0 lead.
Altur and Orgiles won their third-straight doubles match in a hard-fought, 7-6 (7-4) triumph over the Privateers' Marc Mail and Sep de Visser. The dual headed into singles play after Duran and Fedoryshyn defeated New Orleans' Joseph Townes and Jay Temming in a thriller — 7-6 (9-7) — from the second flight.
For Altur and Orgiles, it also marked the fifth-straight doubles bout they have gone unbeaten with wins in four of the five. Duran and Fedoryshyn extended their unbeaten streak to four, taking wins in three of those contests.
Singles saw Brain, Altur and Nakajima secure the team win with victories from the first, fifth and sixth flights.
Brain defeated New Orleans' Mail in straight sets, winning with a 6-4, 6-1 score line from the top flight. Altur doubled up in the win's column from flight five in a 7-5, 6-0 triumph over de Visser. The final victory of the day, Nakajima closed the dual with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Temming from flight six.
Altur and Nakajima's wins extended their unbeaten streaks in the singles category. Altur has won his last four singles in straight-sets with him claiming wins in five of his six matches. Nakajima won his second straight.
The Lions capped the day improving to 6-2 on the season, while New Orleans dropped to 5-3 overall.
