Men’s Tennis knocks off Jacksonville State for 4-2 home win

Lions overcome Gamecocks to remain perfect in home duals

FLORENCE, Ala. (March 10, 2025) – The University of North Alabama men's tennis team extended its unbeaten run at home Monday afternoon, defeating the Jacksonville State Gamecocks, 4-2, in Florence.

The Lions improved to 4-0 in competition from the UNA Tennis Courts, fending off the rival Gamecocks while earning the eighth win of the season. The competitive contest saw UNA avenge its defeat from the 2024 season, starting strong with two doubles wins en route to taking three of the five completed singles courts.

UNA's victory marked the 31st win in the series history against Jacksonville State, moving ahead in the all-time series. The Lions and Gamecocks were even at 30 wins each prior to the dual.

Six Lions gained wins in the outing, led by sophomore Alberto Altur with a singles and doubles victory. Altur extended his hot streak in singles matches, improving to 7-0 while earning his sixth win in doubles.

Altur and sophomore Izan Orgiles combined for a doubles victory, while senior Nazar Fedoryshyn and sophomore Birtan Duran earned their second-straight doubles win and fifth overall. In singles, the freshmen shined with Satoru Nakajima claiming his seventh win while Samu Dominguez's clincher from court six marked his fourth of the season.

North Alabama got a great start with the doubles point, taking the top two courts to gain the early advantage. Altur and Orgiles defeated the Gamecocks' Lucius Soller and Zach Murphy from court one, 6-4, with Fedoryshyn and Duran taking a 6-2 win over Jacksonville State's David Krasner and Marko Milosavljevic from court two.

Altur earned UNA's second team point from court three, earning a 7-5, 6-3 triumph over JSU's Krasner to kick off singles play. Nakajima followed suit with a victory from court five, defeating the Gamecocks' Murphy, 6-4, 7-6 (7-4), via a second-set tiebreak.

Jacksonville State made it interesting claiming singles victories on courts two and four, but UNA's Dominguez provided the clinching win with an exciting three-set thriller.

The Salou, Spain native opened with a 6-3 win in the first set, but the Gamecocks' Matei Palcau answered back with a 6-3 win in the second frame. Dominguez trailed early in the third set, but the freshman overcame a 1-3 deficit to win the match, 6-3, 3-6, 6-3, and clinch the home win for North Alabama.

The Lions' record now stands at 8-3 with the win, while Jacksonville State falls to 6-6 on the season.
