NOTES
LAST TIME OUT: North Alabama finished second at the Golfweek Fall Challenge on Tuesday at True Blue Golf Course in Pawleys Island, S.C. Redshirt freshman Walter Waineby tied for fourth in his collegiate debut, shooting five birdies in the final round for a 10-under total (70-68-68). UNA's final-round 269 was the lowest single-round team score in its Division I history, beating the previous mark by seven strokes. The previous best was 276, set during the Fall 2022 Streaming Invitational. UNA also set the best three-round Division I team total in school history with an 830, beating the previous 834 set at last year's GMAC Invitational.
THE BREAKDOWN: UAB is the host school for the tournament, where 14 teams will be represented. North Alabama tees off on Sept. 22 starting at 8:30 a.m. by way of shotgun start. The course is a par 70 and spans 6,860 yards with 36 holes on Monday and 18 on Tuesday.
THE FIELD: Fourteen teams will participate in this tournament. Central Arkansas, Lipscomb, Queens and West Georgia give North Alabama a heavy dosage of ASUN members to compete against. Other teams include Florida Atlantic, Samford, Jacksonville State, Alabama State, Southeastern Louisiana, Alabama, Winthrop, USC Upstate and UAB. UNA saw UCA and USC Upstate in their opening season tournament.
THE WAINEBY WIZARD: Redshirt freshman Walter Waineby put his spell on the first tournament of the season at the Golfweek Fall Challenge. The Sweden native shot a 206 (10-under) with rounds of 70-68-68 – this became the fifth-best three-round individual total in UNA's Division I history. In accomplishing this feat, the Atlantic Sun Conference honored him with his first ASUN Golfer of the Week award on Sept. 11. This was Waineby's collegiate debut where he finished fourth amongst the field. This finish surpassed Ferworn's ninth-place debut in Division I, setting a new record for best freshman finish in school history.
HOMEGROWN: The starting lineup stays the same for The Schmitz Family head coach Austin Phillips and company. However, Phillips brings along a new individual in redshirt freshman Luke Davis to the Alabama based tournament. Davis, a graduate of Athens Bible School in Athens, Ala. made his collegiate debut at the Grover Page Classic on Sept. 15. He finished one-under through the three rounds in 32nd as he had rounds of 72-70-70 in Memphis, Tenn. Davis gets another opportunity to compete as an individual where he may have some insight thanks to his Alabama roots.
REMEMBER WHEN?: Last season, the Lions finished tied for first at the GMAC Invitational. Then junior Xing Luo took home the individual medal with his 200-overall scorecard at 16-under. This marked the best Division I three-round individual tournament score in program history by three strokes. At the time, the team set the best Division I three-round team record in school history with the 834 score – which was broke last tournament. This will be the fifth straight season the Lions have competed in this tournament.
