Men’s Tennis falls in tight bout vs. Old Dominion

Lions win doubles point; Old Dominion takes four singles to secure win

COLUMBUS, Ohio. (January 24, 2026) – The University of North Alabama men's tennis team dropped a hard-fought battle against Old Dominion in a 4-1 defeat Saturday morning in Columbus, Ohio.

North Alabama (0-3) suffered a setback against the Monarchs (2-2) to conclude the ITA Kickoff Weekend at Ohio State. Despite the result, the morning bout was a competitive affair with the Lions taking the early advantage. Originally scheduled for 6 p.m. CT, the match was played at 9 a.m. due to inclement winter weather.

UNA started strong with the doubles point thanks to victories from the top two flights. Old Dominion had to battle back with the Lions holding momentum, but the Monarchs answered with four-straight singles wins to take the match.

Old Dominion began doubles with a win from flight three, but top-flight duo and No. 73 Alberto Altur and Izan Orgiles earned their first doubles win of the season with a 6-3 victory over Adam Majchrzak and Thomas Nelson. The deciding doubles match from court two went into a tiebreak, but senior Lachlan Brain and sophomore Austin Miramontes secured their first season win in a 7-6 triumph over Jean-Karim Olivier de Sardan and Felix Obermair.

The Monarchs responded back in singles, with Olivier de Sardan taking a 6-2, 6-4 win from court three over Orgiles. Aryan Saleh gave the Monarchs the 2-1 team lead with a 6-2, 6-4 victory over Alex Despoja from court four.

Old Dominion went on to claim two more wins in singles but not without fights from UNA's Satoru Nakajima and Samu Dominguez.

Dominguez dropped his first set vs. the Monarchs' Obermair, 6-4, but he responded in the second with a 6-3 win. A close deciding set saw Obermair take the match from court six with a 6-4 third set.

Nakajima also had a three-set thriller in his first action of the season. He took the opening set, 6-1, before a 6-1 second-set win from Old Dominion's Steveker. Nakajima stayed within striking distance, but the Monarchs took the match thanks to Steveker's 6-3 win in the third set.

UNA's Brain and Altur were engaged in three-set battles prior to the match concluding.

Altur was one game away from his first singles win of the season. He had a 5-2 advantage over Old Dominion's Zech Hamrouni after rallying back from a set down. Hamrouni won the first set in a tight contest, 7-6, before Altur fired back for a 6-1 second-set win.

Brain won his opening set vs. Majchrzak, 6-3, before dropping the second in a 6-1 decision. He was looking to mount a comeback after falling behind in the third frame, 5-2.
