Alvarado notches fourth game with over 20 points; Three Lions secure double figures

FLORENCE, Ala. (January 29, 2026) – The University of North Alabama women's basketball team fell short in a home battle Thursday against Stetson, dropping a 66-62 bout in Atlantic Sun Conference play inside CB&S Bank Arena.

North Alabama (9-10, 4-4 ASUN) played down to the wire, starting strong from the opening tip.

UNA shot 50 percent while holding the Hatters to 35.7 percent shooting to take a 18-13 lead after one. An even quarter for both teams saw the squads score 16 points in the second, but the Lions maintained its advantage with a 34-29 lead. North Alabama excelled on both sides of the floor with a 56 percent shooting percentage in the half while holding Stetson to 36.7 percent.

Stetson (12-8, 5-4 ASUN) gained momentum in the third, outscoring the Lions 16-15. UNA still held on to its lead headed into the fourth with a 49-45 advantage. Stetson used a 21-point fourth quarter to overcome its deficit, taking its first lead since the opening period halfway through. North Alabama kept the contest close as the quarter winded down, coming within a point of the lead with a minute left.

Two late turnovers from UNA while failing to convert two shot attempts all but sealed the victory for Stetson. The Hatters sank three free throws in the final 30 seconds en route to their 12th win of the season.

The Hatters snapped a four-game win streak for the Lions with UNA suffering just its third loss at home – all by four points or less.

Senior Alexsandra Alvarado, sophomore Sofia Ceppellotti and senior India Howard finished as the top three scoring leaders for the Lions. Alvarado led with 21 points to nab her fourth game this season scoring 20 or more points. She also tied a season high with six assists while leading the team with two steals.

Ceppellotti totaled 13 points for her eighth game this season scoring double digits. She was an efficient 5-8 from the field (62.5 percent) while leading the team with eight rebounds. Howard had an all-around game with 10 points, six rebounds, two assists, one block and one steal.
