Men’s Tennis opens ASUN Tournament on Wednesday

No. 2 Lions begin conference tournament defense vs. No. 7 ACU

FORT MYERS, Fla. (April 14, 2026) – The No. 2 University of North Alabama men's tennis team begins its 2026 Atlantic Sun Conference Tournament with a quarterfinal bout against No. 7 Abilene Christian on Wednesday, April 15 in Fort Myers, Fla.

The postseason begins for the Lions in the Sunshine State, and UNA will look to shine in its quest for a second-straight conference tournament championship. The tournament will take place at the FGCU Tennis Complex with first serve set for 4 p.m. CT for fans following along in the Shoals. The winner will advance to the ASUN Championship semifinal round on Friday, April 17 to face the winner of No. 3 Stetson and No. 6 Lipscomb at 8 a.m. CT.

LIONS IN THE POSTSEASON:
The second-seeded Lions look to repeat as conference tournament champions in their fifth appearance. It marks the fourth-straight appearance in the championships and second straight as a top two seed. UNA was the top-seed in 2025, going on to defeat North Florida and Stetson en route to the title. Sophomore Satoru Nakajima was named to the All-Tournament Team and was the tournament MVP after clinching both duals against the Ospreys and Hatters. Former standout Nazar Fedoryshyn was additionally named to the All-Tournament Team after providing key wins throughout the tournament.

LAST TIME OUT: North Alabama had a postseason tuneup bout against Lipscomb, claiming victory against the Bisons in 5-2 triumph on April 7. UNA secured its perfect ASUN record with the dual as five Lions were victorious in respective matches.

HARD WORK PAYS OFF: The ASUN announced their 2026 postseason awards for men's tennis on Monday, April 13, highlighted by three Lions receiving honors in senior Lachlan Brain, junior Alberto Altur and junior Izan Orgiles. Altur and Orgiles were named the ASUN's Doubles Pair of the Year, marking the second in UNA's Division I program history. Altur also was named a First Team All-ASUN selection along with Brain. Brain received his third straight first-team conference selection, and Altur was selected to the first team for the first time in his career. Orgiles rounds out the postseason awards with his second-straight Second Team All-ASUN selection.

SCOUTING THE LIONS:
North Alabama enters the postseason with a 13-8 record while 5-0 against ASUN opponents. On the season, the Lions hold a 62.5 percent win percentage in singles (65-39) and 54 percent win rate in doubles (27-23). Seven players have six or more singles wins led by Altur with 13. Sophomore Samu Dominguez is tied for second with 10 victories alongside Orgiles. Brain has tallied nine wins on the season followed eight from Nakajima and seven from freshman Benjamin Meyers. Junior Alex Despoja has six wins on the campaign, and junior Whitman Davis has two. In doubles, Altur and Brain share the team lead with 11 victories. Dominguez and Orgiles are tied for third with nine wins, and Nakajima has five doubles wins. Meyers and Despoja rounds out the doubles' victories for UNA with four on the year.

SCOUTING ABILENE CHRISTIAN: The Wildcats enter the contest with a 10-6 season record. Abilene Christian earned its 10th win sweeping No. 10 Queens in a 4-0 victory in the ASUN Tournament First Round. The Wildcats win singles matches at a 55.1 percent rate and doubles at a 52.8 percent rate. Abilene Christian has two All-ASUN players in Luis Jose Nakamine and Jorge Aza. Nakamine was voted to the first team while Aza was selected to the freshman team. Aza leads the team with 11 singles wins, and Merse Deli leads in doubles with eight victories. Juan Nuñez is the head coach for the Wildcats.

SERIES HISTORY: North Alabama will go for its first-ever victory over Abilene Christian in the fifth all-time meeting. This marks the first meeting since April 4, 2009.
