FORT MYERS, Fla. (April 15, 2026) – The No. 2 University of North Alabama men's tennis team secured a dramatic 4-3 win Wednesday over No. 7 Abilene Christian in the Atlantic Sun Conference Tournament Quarterfinals in Fort Myers, Fla.
UNA advances to the semifinals with the victory, set to face No. 3 Stetson on Friday, April 17 at 8 a.m. CT.
The Lions' postseason began with a challenge against the Wildcats, who came to compete after a win over No. 10 Queens in the first round. Abilene Christian contested North Alabama early in doubles, but UNA stood tall to take the crucial one-point advantage.
The Wildcats came firing back in singles, pushing the Lions to a deciding match on court two. With a semifinal berth at stake, junior Alberto Altur fought back from a set down to force a third and deciding set. Altur went on to win the third frame and keep the postseason dreams alive for UNA.
The win also marked the first-ever victory over Abilene Christian in program history. UNA had gone 0-4 in the series prior to the tournament matchup.
ACU opened the dual with a doubles win from court three, but junior Alex Despoja and sophomore Satoru Nakajima answered back with a 6-4 victory from court two over Luis Jose Nakamine and Tomas Quesada.
The final doubles win came courtesy of Altur and junior Izan Orgiles, who showed why they were voted the ASUN's 2026 Doubles Pair of the Year. The two defeated Merse Deli and Ethan Scribner 7-5 to give UNA the doubles point.
Singles started fast for the Lions, as sophomore Samu Dominguez secured the first win with a 6-4, 6-4 victory over Jorge Aza from court five. Nakajima gave UNA the 3-0 team lead after his 6-3, 6-4 win from court six over Ethan Scribner.
The Wildcats would not go down without a fight, taking three-straight singles matches on courts one, three and four. The three Wildcats' wins forced the deciding bout between Altur and Abilene Christian's Tomas Quesada.
Quesada took the first set with a 6-3 victory, but Altur shifted momentum back to UNA with a 7-5 win in set two. Altur used the momentum in the third to take the set and match with a 6-4 triumph.
