JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (April 9, 2026) – The University of North Alabama men's tennis team was announced as the second seed in the 2026 Atlantic Sun Conference Men's Tennis Championships by the league office Thursday afternoon.
North Alabama will head to Fort Myers, Fla. on the campus of FGCU to begin its tournament title defense next week. UNA opens the tournament in the quarterfinals Wednesday, April 15 at 4 p.m. CT against the winner of seventh-seeded Abilene Christian and 10-seeded Queens. The two will play to advance to the quarterfinal round against UNA on Tuesday, April 14 at 4 p.m. CT.
The Lions will go for a second-straight tournament crown after winning it all in 2025. UNA claimed a 4-2 semifinal win over hosts North Florida before defeating Stetson in the final, 4-1. It marked North Alabama's first ASUN postseason championship in any sport.
UNA enters the postseason after a 13-8 record during the 2026 regular season. The Lions went 5-0 against ASUN teams and had a 7-1 home record. The season extended North Alabama's strong marks in conference play and at home in recent years. Since the 2024 season, UNA is 24-4 against ASUN opponents and 24-2 in home matches.
The season began with an appearance at the 2026 ITA Kickoff Weekend in Columbus, Ohio. North Alabama was one of 56 teams across 14 host sites competing in the event with the winner of each site advancing to the ITA National Team Indoor Championship. The outing was hosted by Ohio State as the Lions competed against the No. 6 Buckeyes along with Old Dominion.
Highlights of the season included five sweeps over opponents, including two in against Lamar on Feb. 7 and UAB on April 6. The win against Lamar was the first-ever meeting between the two, and the UAB triumph was fourth all-time and first since 1985.
Other key wins included a 4-3 victory each over both Kennesaw State and Stetson. The win over Kennesaw State was the second all-time win in five meetings. The Lions' lone season meeting against the Hatters was a rematch of the 2025 ASUN Tournament Final.
UNA had a 62.5 percent win rate in singles and 54 percent win rate in doubles. Each player had at two singles wins with seven players winners of six or more matches. Seven Lions additionally had at least four doubles victories with four registering nine or more.
Junior Alberto Altur had a team-high 13-4 record in singles play. Sophomore Samu Dominguez and junior Izan Orgiles sport double-digit wins with 10 each. Senior Lachlan Brain has nine singles wins followed by sophomore Satoru Nakajima (8), freshman Benjamin Meyers (7), junior Alex Despoja (6) and junior Whitman Davis (2).
Altur and Brain have a team-leading 11 doubles wins. Dominguez and Orgiles are tied with nine, and Nakajima follows with five victories. Meyers (4) and Despoja (4) round out UNA's doubles wins.
Two Lions received ASUN Player of the Week honors in Altur and Orgiles. Altur earned two honors on Feb. 17 and March 31, respectively, and Orgiles nabbed the weekly award on March 17.
