With over 1,000 victories in program history, the University of North Alabama volleyball team has represented one of the most consistent programs in all of UNA Athletics. The volleyball program at UNA began in 1969 as a part of the Physical Education Department and was known as extramurals. Since then, the Lions have added multiple state, conference, regional and national championships and has extended its rich tradition to the NCAA Division I level as a member of the ASUN Conference..
• In 1975, UNA claimed the Alabama State Championship, downing the University of Alabama 1-15, 15-12, 15-6 in the championship match for the title. The Lady Lions downed Troy State, Auburn and Montevallo in the preliminary matches before defeating the Crimson Tide.
• In 1976, Lillian Goodlow, a standout in basketball and volleyball at Bradshaw High School in Florence, became the first female athlete to be awarded an athletic scholarship to UNA.
• In 1982, the Gulf South Conference began awarding championships in women’s sports. The UNA volleyball team claimed the first official league title for women with a 3-0 sweep of Jacksonville State in the championship. UNA added to that GSC tradition by winning six of the first seven GSC volleyball championships, claiming the crown in 1984, 1985, 1986, 1987 and 1988 as well.
• In 1995, Matt Peck was hired as the Lions head coach, and in nine years he took the UNA program to the highest national level, with eight NCAA appearances, four trips to the Elite Eight, two Final Fours and the 2003 NCAA Division II National Championship.
• In 2003, UNA won the NCAA Division II national championship. The title was the first national championship for a UNA women's team and also represented the first collegiate volleyball national title in the state of Alabama.
• In 2006, the Lions fell one victory shy of another national title. Top-ranked Tampa defeated UNA 3-1 in the finals of the NCAA Tournament in Pensacola, Fla. The post-season run capped a 35-6 campaign. Stephanie Radecki was named the GSC East Division and the South Central Region's Coach of the Year, each for the second straight season.
• In 2015, following an eight-year break, UNA regained the GSC title. Radecki was named GSC Coach of the Year while Natasha Fomina was selected as the program's 11th All-American. The following year, Fomina was named GSC Player of the Year as the Lions repeated as conference champs. She later earned All-South Region, All-America and Academic All-America honors.
• In 2017, UNA completed its final season at the Division II level. The Lions went 27-8 and again advanced to the NCAA Tournament. Lexie Bradley was named GSC Player of the Year and also earned All-South Region, All-America and Academic All-America honors as well.
• In 2018, Radecki was named head coach at Southern Mississippi and North Alabama hired Bob White as the program's ninth head coach. UNA entered its first season as members of Division I and the ASUN Conference.
• In the summer of 2021, UNA ended its four-year transition period and was officially classified as an NCAA Division I athletics program. Before the start of the season, Tristan Johnson was hired as the program's 11th head coach.
