NOTES
LAST TIME OUT: A home winning streak that spanned exactly a year came to an end for the North Alabama men's basketball team on Saturday, as the Lions fell on the wrong end of a second half comeback against ETSU inside CB&S Bank Arena — 78-74. The Lions had an 18-point lead early in the second half, but 10 second-half turnovers proved costly. UNA had a chance to tie the game with two seconds left, but a no-call on a contested shot ultimately ended the game.
SCOUTING THE LIONS: UNA has a 2-2 record with a season-opening loss to Mississippi State and wins over Lane College and Northwestern State. The Lions have all five starters averaging double-figures, led by redshirt junior Corneilous Williams with 16.3 points and 13.3 rebounds per game. Sophomore Kevin de Kovachich has scored in double figures all four games and averages 14.5 PPG. Senior Donte Bacchus and junior Canin Jefferson are over 13.0 PPG while sixth-year senior Dallas Howell is averaging 10.0 PPG after scoring 19 last time out against ETSU.
SCOUTING THE TIGERS: Clemson has a 3-1 record with wins over New Hampshire, Gardner-Webb and Morehead State. The Tigers lost their road opener on Saturday at Georgetown by a 79-74 final in Capital One Arena. Clemson finished 27-7 overall and 18-2 in the ACC last season, making the NCAA Tournament as a five seed. The Tigers were upset by No. 12 McNeese in the first round. Clemson currently averages 85.5 PPG while allowing just 58.0 PPG. Redshirt senior forward Nick Davidson is the leading scorer with 11.8 PPG and 5.8 RPG.
SERIES HISTORY: This will be the first all-time meeting between UNA and Clemson. The Lions have an 0-3 record against current members of the ACC with a close loss to Pitt in 2018 and losses to Florida State in 2019 and Georgia Tech in 2022. Clemson is 13-2 against current members of the ASUN. UNA looks to become the first current member to defeat Clemson since 1975.
LIONS CAN HANG WITH POWER TEAMS: The Lions have had some tight contests — and one win — against high-major opponents in eight seasons under Tony Pujol. This includes a 66-65 win over Ole Miss in 2022 for the first SEC win in program history, an overtime loss to Kansas State in 2023 that UNA led for over 31 minutes, a loss to Auburn in 2024 where UNA took the lead with 5:12 left in the first half, and a loss in this year's season opener to Mississippi State where the Lions led by nine points in the second half.
WATCH THE TURNOVER BATTLE: The Lions ranked second in the NCAA last season with just 8.9 turnovers per game. This season has been a bit tougher in that category, as the Lions still rank among the top half of the country, but are averaging 12.3 per game. Clemson currently leads all NCAA teams with only 6.0 turnovers per game and also leads the country with a 2.96 assist/turnover ratio.
A ONE YEAR STREAK: Before the loss to ETSU, UNA had a 16-game winning streak at home that spanned exactly 365 days, including 11 wins over ASUN opponents. This was the fifth-longest streak in the nation behind St. Thomas (W19), Akron (W18), Duke (W18) and Miami Ohio (W17). The last time UNA lost at home before ETSU was a 97-96 overtime loss to Samford, who was then the defending Southern Conference champion. Both losses came on Nov. 15, 2024 and Nov. 15, 2025.
PUJOL CAN PULL WINS: Since Tony Pujol took over at UNA in 2018 — the first season of Division I basketball — the Lions have a 33-5 record at home against non-conference opponents. UNA also went 11-0 against ASUN opponents in The Bank last season.
C2 IN THE RANKS: Corneilous Williams currently ranks third in the NCAA with 53 rebounds over four games. He also ranks fifth in the NCAA with 13.3 RPG. Both totals lead the ASUN. He has double-digit totals in all four games this season.
DEBUT TO REMEMBER: Making his first collegiate appearance off the bench, true freshman Braylon Patton went 3-3 behind the arc and finished with 11 points against Mississippi State. Patton had the highest-scoring debut by a true freshman for UNA since Jacari Lane scored 11 points against Oakwood in 2022.
WASHINGTON THE COMMANDER: Despite playing just eight minutes on Tuesday, junior forward Tank Washington played hero in overtime against Northwestern State. He scored his first two points as a Lion with a go-ahead layup to make it 83-81 with 2:06 left in overtime. Later, with the Lions up 85-83, Washington was guarding leading scorer Micah Thomas, forced him into a bad shot, then cleaned up the offensive rebound with a game-winning block with one second left. This ultimately secured the win.
BLOCK PARTY: UNA finished with eight blocks at Mississippi State. The eight blocks are the third-most in a game at the Division I level — since 2018. The all-time record remains 11 blocks, set last season against Austin Peay in an 88-84 overtime win on Jan. 25, 2025. The four blocks for Corneilous Williams were two shy of his own Division I school record set against Austin Peay last season. All four blocks came in the first half.
PRESEASON HYPE: The Lions were picked first in the ASUN Preseason Media Poll and second in the ASUN Preseason Coaches Poll last month. UNA was also the only team to have more than one player on the all-conference preseason team, as both Corneilous Williams and Donte Bacchus were voted. Williams was one of two unanimous picks along with ASUN Preseason Player of the Year Chris Ashby from Queens.
LOCKED IN: Back in August, UNA Director of Athletics Dr. Josh Looney announced a new five-year contract for head men's basketball coach Tony Pujol on Monday, extending him through the 2029-30 season. Pujol was hired on April 2, 2018 and has been the program's only coach during the Division I era. He enters his eighth season at the helm and has 104 wins over eight seasons.
ON DECK: The Lions will travel to Clemson on Monday night for a nationally-televised matchup on ACC Network. Tipoff is set for 8 p.m. CT.
