NO. 4 NOVA TOO MUCH FOR UNA WOMEN

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla., – The University of North Alabama women's basketball team had no answer for fourth-ranked Nova Southeastern, falling on the road Friday 102-61 in the season opener for both teams. The Sharks shot 55.7 percent from the floor and held a commanding 56-24 rebounding advantage.

Nova led wire to wire, using a fast start to take control and never looking back. After the home team raced out to an 11-1 lead, the Lions used three-point baskets from Shuunice Herron and Jaclyn Heath to cut the deficit to 15-9 with 3:36 remaining in the opening quarter. The Sharks, however, closed the period on a 13-4 run to take a 28-13 lead at the end of the first quarter.

The lead only grew in the second quarter and remained double-digits the rest of the way. Nova was 22-of-34 from the floor in the first half and took a 57-28 lead at the break.
UNA outscored the Sharks 25-19 in the third quarter but could get no closer than 21 points. A total of 13 players scored for Nova, including four in double digits. Taylor Buie led the way with a game-high 25 points.

It was the first time the Lions had surrendered 100 points in a game since a 106-98 loss to Harding early in the 2006-07 season.

Herron led UNA with 15 points. She was 6-of-16 from the floor with a trio of three-pointers. KeKe Gunter and Elise Holden added 10 points each for the Lions.

UNA will remain in Fort Lauderdale to face Barry on Saturday. Tip-off is set for noon (Eastern).
