FLORENCE – Elise Holden scored 20 points as the University of North Alabama women's basketball team picked up its first win of the season with a 71-48 victory over Tuskegee Thursday evening at Flowers Hall. The freshman from Collierville, Tenn., added seven rebounds and went 6-for-11 from the floor as the Lions improved to 1-2 on the year.
After trailing 14-12 at the end of the first quarter, UNA used a 21-9 run in the second period to take control. The Lions led by 10 points at the half and never trailed over the final 20 minutes of play.
Holden connected on a three-point place in the opening minute of the second quarter with a basket and free throw to give UNA a 15-14 lead. After the Golden Tigers regained the lead with a basket on the ensuing possession, North Alabama got the lead for good with a three-point basket by KeKe Gunter with 8:44 remaining in the period.
The Lions used a 9-0 run to stretch the lead to double digits. A layup by Savannah Stults made the score 29-19 at the 1:35 mark in the second quarter. UNA led 33-23 at the break.
The lead only grew in the second half. Tuskegee made only 10 shots from the floor over the final two quarters while the Lions were 14-of-38 from the field, including a trio of three-pointers. Katelyn Nunley scored all 10 of her points in the third quarter as UNA extended its lead to 59-37 heading into the final quarter.
Gunter finished the game with 10 points, seven rebounds and six assists for UNA. Holden also had seven rebounds on the night.
Tuskegee (1-2) was led by Chelsea Azore's 16 points.
UNA will be back in action Saturday at home against Montevallo. Game time is set for 5 p.m. at Flowers Hall.
