FLORENCE – The University of North Alabama women's basketball team could not overcome a late scoring drought against Montevallo Saturday afternoon, falling 80-71 at Flowers Hall. The Lions failed to score over the game's final 3:34 in the loss to fall to 1-3 on the season.
After trailing 70-63 at the 5:16 mark, the Lions used an 8-0 run to grab a 71-70 lead with 3:34 left. UNA, however, would not score again, going 0-for-8 from the floor with two turnovers down the stretch.
KeKe Gunter led UNA with 18 points. Elise Holden added 14 points while Janae Lyde recorded 12 points and seven assists. Shunice Herron rounded out the top scorers for the Lions with 11 points.
Montevallo held a 44-24 advantage in points in the paint. The Falcons also had a 44-33 advantage in rebounding with 12 offensive boards leading to 12 second-chance points. The visitors shot 59.6 percent on the day.
The Lions countered with three-point shooting, connecting on 11-of-33 attempts from long range. Gunter was 4-of-6 from three-point range while Herron added a trio of three-pointers. For the game, UNA shot 32.4 percent from the floor.
UNA will travel to Arkansas Tech on Tuesday. Tip-off is set for 5:30 p.m. on the ATU campus in Russellville, Ark.
