NASHVILLE, Tenn., – Lipscomb jumped out to an early lead in the first quarter and maintained a double-digit advantage the rest of the way in an 88-67 exhibition win over the University of North Alabama women's basketball team Saturday afternoon.The Bison, who counted the contest as an official game, used a 49-34 rebounding advantage and scored 42 points in the paint to event their record at 3-3 on the season. Five players reached double figures in scoring, including Ashley Southern, who recorded 21 points and 13 rebounds on the day.
KeKe Gunter and Jaclyn Heath combined for 37 points for North Alabama. Gunter had 19 points and five rebounds to lead the team. Freshman Katelyn Nunley added 10 points for the game.
UNA scored the first basket of the game and had the game tied at 4-4 before Lipscomb reeled off 15 straight points to take a 19-4 lead. A three-point basket by Heath broke the drought before a basket and free throw by Nunley completed a three-point play and made the score 21-13 with 2:38 remaining in the first quarter. The Lions would get no closer.
The Bison closed the quarter on an 8-0 run, then led 50-31 at the half. For the game, Lipscomb shot 51.4 percent from the floor.
North Alabama will remain in Nashville for another exhibition contest against a Division I team on Sunday. The Lions will face host Tennessee State at 2 p.m.at the Gentry Center on the TSU campus.
