SHORTER DOMINATES THE PAINT IN WIN OVER UNA WOMEN

FLORENCE – Shorter used a dominating performance on the boards to claim a 72-53 road victory over North Alabama Saturday afternoon in Gulf South Conference women's basketball action. With the loss, UNA falls to 2-9 overall and 1-5 in GSC play.

For the second straight game, points in the paint were hard to come by for the Lions. Shorter held a commanding 53-33 advantage in rebounding and held UNA to just 11-of-33 shooting from inside the three-point arch.

The Hawks led by as many as 21 in the second half before a fourth-quarter run cut the deficit to 12. After trailing 59-38 early in the final period, KeKe Gunter capped an 11-2 run for the Lions with a three-point basket. The trey made the score 61-49 with 6:10 remaining.

North Alabama would get no closer. Shorter responded with a 9-4 run to close the game.

Gunter finished with 23 points and 11 rebounds to lead UNA. Shorter (7-2 overall, 1-5 GSC) had two players record double-doubles. Taylor Adams had 26 points and 13 rebounds while Shaundricka Mann recorded 13 points and 10 rebounds for the game.

After taking two weeks off for the Christmas break, UNA will return to action on Saturday, Jan. 2, at Delta State. Tip-off is set for 2 p.m. at Sillers Coliseum on the DSU campus in Cleveland, Miss.
