UNA WOMEN END SKID WITH 70-54 WIN OVER VALDOSTA STATE

FLORENCE – Janae Lyde scored 17 points and dished out eight assists to lead the University of North Alabama women's basketball team to a 70-54 win over Valdosta State Saturday afternoon at Flowers Hall. The Gulf South Conference victory snapped an eight-game skid for UNA and earned a spilt in the season series against the Blazers.

The Lions (3-15 overall, 2-11 GSC) trailed 23-14 at the end of the first quarter, and faced a 26-14 deficit early in the second period before using a 16-0 run to take control. A basket by Alexus Patterson gave UNA its first lead at 27-26 with 5:25 remaining. KeKe Gunter followed with a three-point basket to cap the run and give the Lions a four-point lead. Valdosta State never regained the advantage.

North Alabama outscored the visitors 26-8 in the quarter to take a 40-31 lead into the break. VSU cut the deficit to 44-40 at the 3:55 mark of the third period but could get no closer. Consecutive three-pointers by Herron, along with a basket by Patterson and another trey by Jaclyn Heath pushed the score to 55-42 and the lead remained double digits the rest of the way.

Lyde, a senior from Albany, New York, did most of her damage at the free throw line, going 11-of-13 on the day. Patterson finished with 14 points and just missed a double-double with nine rebounds. Herron rounded out the top scorers for UNA with 13 points.

Madi Mitchell led Valdosta State (9-9 overall, 5-8 GSC) with a game-high 20 points. Maggie Davis added 13 points and 13 rebounds for the Blazers.

UNA will travel to West Alabama on Thursday. Tip-off is set for 5:30 p.m. at Pruitt Hall on the UWA campus in Livingston.
