LIONS RALLY FOR OT WIN AT WEST ALABAMA

LIVINGSTON – Trailing by seven with 1:38 remaining in overtime, the University of North Alabama women's basketball team closed the game on a 9-0 run to claim a 73-71 victory over West Alabama Thursday evening at Pruitt Hall on the UWA campus. The first road win of the season and second straight win in GSC play gives the Lions a 4-15 overall record with a 3-11 league mark. It also completes the season sweep over the Tigers.

West Alabama got a basket with 6.6 remaining in regulation to tie the game at 61-61 before carrying the momentum over to the extra period. The Tigers raced out to a 71-64 lead but did not connect from the floor over the final 2:56 of the game.

Katelyn Nunley started the comeback for the Lions with a basket with 1:20 to play. UWA then ran the game clock down to 47.6 seconds before being called for a shot clock violation. With 40 seconds left, KeKe Gunter scored in the lane to make it 71-68.

On the ensuing UWA possession, Shunice Herron recorded a steal and passed to Janae Lyde, who found Nunley for a layup to make it a one-point game at the 14.2-second mark. West Alabama inbounded the ball only to turn it over again to give the Lions a chance to take the lead. After drawing a foul, Herron hit both free throws to give UNA a 72-71 lead with 8.5 seconds remaining.

The Tigers could not answer. Another turnover led to a foul on Gunter, who hit 1-of-2 free throws to ice the game with 1.7 seconds left.

Gunter finished with a career-high 30 points, including six in overtime to lead the Lions. The sophomore from Columbus, Ga., was 10-of-20 from the floor with six three-point baskets. Herron added 13 points on the night while Alexus Patterson tossed in 10 points for North Alabama. Lyde also dished out 11 assists for the game.

For the game, UNA shot 53.1 percent from the floor but did most of its damage at the defensive end of the floor. The Lions forced 30 turnovers, leading to 25 points.

Ariel Wilson led West Alabama (6-12 overall, 3-11 GSC) with 23 points and 15 rebounds.

UNA will continued its GSC road swing on Saturday at West Georgia. Tip-off is set for 2 p.m. (EST) at the Coliseum on the UWG campus.
