LATE BASKET SINKS UNA WOMEN 67-66

CARROLLTON, Ga., – West Georgia converted a basket and free throw to complete a three-point play with 2.9 seconds remaining to get a 67-66 win over North Alabama Saturday afternoon in Gulf South Conference women's basketball action. UNA was unable to get a shot off in the closing seconds denying the team of a three-game winning streak. With the loss, the Lions fall to 4-16 overall and 3-12 in league action.

Katrina Littlepage scored West Georiga's final nine points as the Wolves overcame a six-point deficit over the final 1:35 of play. Her consecutive jumpers cut the lead to 66-64 with 21 seconds remaining. A turnover by the Lions set up the winning sequence for UWG. Littlepage drove the lane and was fouled before making a basket to tie the game at 66-66. Her free throw proved to be the winning margin.

The loss snaps a two-game winning streak for UNA that saw the Lions defeat Valdosta State at home and West Alabama on the road. The Wolves also complete the season sweep after getting a 44-38 victory on Dec. 10 at Flowers Hall.

On Saturday, both teams shot 43.4 percent from the floor with seven three-point baskets each. UNA held a 32-31 edge in rebounding.

The Lions led 34-33 at the half, but entered the final period trailing 52-51. In the fourth quarter, North Alabama led by as many as six points. A layup by Janae Lyde gave UNA a 64-58 lead with 2:30 remaining. The two teams then traded baskets with the Lions regaining the six-point advantage on a basket by Katelyn Nunley at the 1:55 mark. UNA would not score again.

Nunley, a freshman from Belmont, Miss., finished with a career-high 30 points. She also led the team with nine rebounds. Shunice Herron added 11 points for the Lions while Lyde had 10 points for the game.

West Georgia (5-16 overall, 5-10 GSC) was led by Terrianna Cave's 25 points.
