COMEBACK FALLS SHORT FOR UNA WOMEN

ROME, Ga., – A second-half rally came up just short as the University of North Alabama women's basketball team dropped a 71-69 decision at Shorter Thursday evening. After trailing by as many as 21 points in the third quarter, UNA got within a single possession in the final minute of play, but could never tie or take the lead. The loss leaves UNA with a 4-17 overall record and 3-13 Gulf South Conference record.

The Lions trailed 53-32 in the closing minutes of the third quarter. After a basket by Alexus Patterson in the closing seconds of the period cut the deficit to 17 points, UNA outscored the home team 27-12 in the fourth quarter.

Shorter made just 2-of-7 shots from the floor in the final period, but converted on 7-of-8 free throw attempts to maintain the lead. The Lions used a 13-0 run to get back in the game. A basket by Katelyn Nunley capped the run and made the score 61-55 with 5:52 remaining.

The Hawks extended their lead to nine with a three-point basket on the ensuing possession but could never regain a double-digit advantage.

With Shorter leading by six in the final minute of play, an offensive rebound of Savannah Stults led to a basket by Janae Lyde to make the score 68-64 with 28 seconds to play. UNA forced a turnover on the next Shorter possession but would be unable to capitalize.

The Hawks' Tamarr Williams got a steal and drew a foul. She hit two free throws to make the score 70-64 with 18 seconds remaining. The Lions got another basket by Lyde before Shorter hit 1-of-2 foul shots in the closing seconds. A three-pointer at the buzzer by KeKe Gunter only accounted for the final margin.

Patterson finished with a game-high 22 points to lead UNA. Gunter added 18 points on the day.

Taylor Adams led Shorter (14-6 overall, 11-5 GSC) with 15 points and 10 rebounds.
