VOLLEYBALL SPLITS FINAL DAY OF REGIONAL CROSSOVER

ORLANDO, Fla., – After sweeping the top seed in the Sunshine State Conference earlier in the day, the University of North Alabama volleyball team could not complete an undefeated weekend at the South Region Crossover on Saturday, falling to Saint Leo in five sets. The split gives UNA an 18-4 record on the season.
 
The Lions joined West Florida and Valdosta State as the only Gulf South Conference teams to post a 2-1 record at the event. Overall, the SSC posted a 25-8 showing at the Orlando Sports Center.
 
Against Eckerd, Natasha Fomina and Jessica Austin combined for 24 kills in the 25-13, 25-15, 25-18 victory. The loss represented the first of the event for the top-seeded Tritons (13-5). Fomina had a match-high 13 kills with a .600 hitting percentage. Austin hit .786, getting 11 kills on 14 swings without an error. Peyton Lang just missed double figures with nine kills.
 
For the match, UNA hit .471 as a team. The Lions hit over .400 in every set, including a .548 showing in the final game. Jayden Davila-McClary recorded 39 assists.
 
Defensively, Ashtyn Kapovich produced a match-high 14 digs. Sarah Ann Tillery also reached double digits in the category with 11 digs for the match.
 
In the second match, Saint Leo was able to escape with the win by winning the final two sets in the 20-25, 25-19, 15-25, 25-22, 18-16 win.
 
UNA had a match point after a kill by Lang gave the Lions a 14-13 lead. Saint Leo, however, scored two straight points to get to a match point of its own. UNA was able fight off two match points before back to back kills by Saint Leo ended the match.
 
Bradley led the UNA hitters with a career-high 24 kills. The junior from Florence added four blocks, four digs and two service aces for the match. Fomina added 15 kills for the Lions while Ana Gabriela Pacheco turned in a season-best 11 kills for UNA. Lang rounded out the top hitters with 10 kills while Davila-McClary had 55 assists.
 
Kapovich led four UNA players in double-digit dig totals with 22 in the match. Davila-McClary added 20 digs while Lang had 19. Tillery finished the match with 14 digs for the Lions.
 
UNA will return to Gulf South Conference play with three home matches. The Lions will host West Georgia Tuesday at 7 p.m. before playing Lee on Friday and Shorter on Saturday at Flowers Hall.
