VALDOSTA STATE RALLIES TO TOP UNA VOLLEYBALL

VALDOSTA, Ga., – The University of North Alabama volleyball team came up two points short in three consecutive sets Friday evening in a 3-0 loss at Valdosta State. The Blazers handed UNA just its second loss in Gulf South Conference play with the 29-27, 26-24, 25-23 home victory.

With the loss, UNA falls to 15-2 on the season and 7-2 in GSC play. Valdosta State improves to 6-10 overall and 4-5 in conference play.

On Friday, UNA had set points in each of the first two games and led 21-15 in the third. The Blazers, however, rallied each time. VSU's Anita Rodriguez-Sanchez led all players with 17 kills while Sydney Chick recorded a match-high 22 digs for the Blazers.

A kill by Lexie Bradley gave the Lions a 24-23 lead in the opening set. UNA had two more set points in the frame before Valdosta State grabbed a 27-26 lead and a set point of its own. An attack error against the Blazers tied the game before back-to-back VSU kills ended the game.

In the second set, UNA again reached set point first when Jayden Davila-McClary and Jessica Austin combined on a block to put the Lions ahead 24-23. VSU, however, closed the set with three straight points to take an overall 2-0 lead in the match.

North Alabama led by as many as eight points in the third set, only to see the Blazers rally once more. A kill by Peyton Lang gave UNA a 14-6 lead before the comeback began. The Lions held a 21-15 advantage before VSU closed the match on a 10-2 run. After a 9-0 run gave VSU a match point at 24-21, UNA closed the gap with consecutive points. An attack error, however, ended Lions' attempt at a rally.

Austin finished with 11 kills while Bradley added 10 kills on the night. Davila-McClary added 34 assists while Ashtyn Kapovich turned in 16 digs.

UNA will play at GSC-leading West Florida on Saturday. Match time is set for 3 p.m. at the UWF Field House in Pensacola.
