LIONS REPEAT AS GSC VOLLEYBALL CHAMPIONS

PENSACOLA, Fla., – For the second straight season, the University of North Alabama volleyball team knocked off top seed and tournament host West Florida 3-2 in the Gulf South Conference championship match. Peyton Lang had 17 kills, including the final two of the day to clinch the title and wrap up tournament Most Outstanding Player honors.

The 25-23, 11-25, 22-25, 25-13, 15-13 win gives UNA a 29-5 record on the season, as well as the program's 18th GSC championship. North Alabama will receive an automatic bid to the 2016 NCAA Division II South Region Tournament.

"What a great match," said UNA head coach Stephanie Radecki. "Our players do a good job of stepping up and knowing when it's time to compete. There were no big runs in that last set. It stayed close the whole time and we made plays when we had to."

Natasha Fomina added 13 kills and joined Lang and Ashtyn Kapovich on the all-tournament team. Kapovich finished the day with a match-high 16 digs. Lang also posted 13 digs for her 11 double-double of the year.

UNA led by as many as six in the opening set before holding off a late UWF comeback. The Argonauts rallied to tie the score at 23-23 before back-to-back kills by Lang ended the game. Lexie Bradley had five kills to lead the way for the Lions.

West Florida led wire to wire in a dominating second set. The Argonauts scored the first five points and quickly extended the lead to double digits. UWF hit .417 in the frame while the Lions were held to a -.069 hitting percentage.

Another fast start propelled the Argonauts in the third set. West Florida recorded three service aces in a 6-1 run to start the game. UWF extended its lead to 15-9 before the Lions used a 6-1 run of their own to cut the lead to 16-15 and prompt a time out by the hosts. The Argos, however, responded and came away with the 25-22 victory.

It was North Alabama's turn to grab the early momentum in the fourth set. The Lions jumped out to a 19-11 lead before cruising to the win. Lang had seven kills in the game to lead UNA.

In the final game, the two teams traded points early until West Florida scored three straight to grab a 9-6 lead. Following a UNA timeout, two kills by Fomina and a pair of attack errors against the Argos tied the score at 10-10. From there, the score was tied three more times, including a 13-13 deadlock. That's when consecutive kills by Lang ended the match.

"We have watched Peyton grow up in this program," added Radecki. "She has always  been a key player for us. Today, she was an impact player. She found ways to put the ball away and was also very effective passing the ball."

Bradley finished with 11 kills while UNA setter Jayden Davila-McClary had 48 assists. Corisha Smith led West Florida (25-9) with a match-high 19 kills.

The NCAA Division II South Region Tournament will be Dec. 1-3 on the campus of the top seed. North Alabama will learn its opponent during an online selection show at 6:30 p.m. Monday evening. Information on the upcoming tourney can be found at www.roarlions.com
