UNA WOMEN SUFFER FIRST LOSS AT VALDOSTA STATE

VALDOSTA, Ga., – Valdosta State shot 56.5 percent in the second half to break a tie game at intermission and record a 76-69 home win over the University of North Alabama women's basketball team Saturday afternoon. The loss represents the first of the season for UNA, which falls to 9-1 overall and 3-1 in Gulf South Conference play.
 
Sonya Franklin scored 28 points to lead the Blazers (6-4 overall, 3-1 GSC) She scored the first eight points of the second half for VSU after the two teams battled to a 32-32 deadlock at the break. The home team led by as many as nine over the final two quarters, but could never put the game away until the closing minutes.
 
After a basket by UNA's Katelyn Nunley cut the deficit to 70-65 with 1:32 remaining, the Lions were unable to connect from the floor again. Valdosta State hit 6-of-11 free throws down the stretch to seal the win.
 
VSU dominated the glass on the day, outrebounding North Alabama 47-27. The Blazers grabbed 11 rebounds on offense, but were held to eight second-chance points.
 
Three players reached double digits in scoring for UNA. KeKe Gunter led the way with 20 points, but fouled out with 1:07 remaining. Emma Wallen connected on five three-point baskets and finished with 16 points while Nunley finished with 13 points for the Lions. Jaclyn Heath also dished out a game-high six assists.
 
UNA will continue its GSC road swing at West Florida on Monday. Tip-off is set for 5:30 p.m. at the UWF Field House in Pensacola.
