UNA WOMEN KNOCK OFF CHOCTAWS 81-65

FLORENCE – After playing in three consecutive one-possession games that came down to the wire, the University of North Alabama women's basketball team enjoyed a double-digit victory over Mississippi College Thursday evening. Five players reached double figures in scoring as the Lions posted an 81-65 win at Flowers Hall.
 
UNA used a strong third quarter to pull away and held off the Choctaws down the stretch to improve to 5-18 overall and 4-14 in Gulf South Conference play. Alexus Patterson scored 16 points and pulled down 10 rebounds to record her first double-double for the Lions.
 
North Alabama led 22-13 at the end of the first quarter and took a 38-31 lead into the break. The Lions scored the first six points of the second half and led by as many as 20 in the third quarter. A basket by Patterson made the score 59-39 with 2:37 remaining in the period.
 
The lead remained double digits the rest of the way, despite Mississippi College cutting it to 10 points on three different occasions in the fourth quarter.
 
Janae Lyde added 14 points and just missed a double-double of her own with nine rebounds. The senior from Albany, New York also dished out eight assists on the night. KeKe Gunter and Savannah Stults scored 13 points each while Jaclyn Heath rounded out the top scores for UNA with 10 points.
 
Mississippi College (5-16 overall, 3-15 GSC) was led by Carla Clemmons' 14 points and seven rebounds.
 
UNA will host Delta State on Saturday. Tip-off is set for 1 p.m. at Flowers Hall.
