DELTA STATE WOMEN RALLY TO TOP LIONS

FLORENCE – Delta State overcame an eight-point deficit in the fourth quarter to rally for a 62-58 win over North Alabama Saturday afternoon in Gulf South Conference women's basketball action. The loss at Flowers Hall leaves the Lions with a 5-19 overall record and 4-15 mark in GSC play.
 
UNA led 53-45 with 6:49 remaining after two free throws by KeKe Gunter. DSU, however, closed strong, grabbing the lead with a 9-0 run. Trailing 54-53 with 2:57 to play, the Lions got a three-point play by Janae Lyde to briefly regain the lead. The basket, however, proved to be the final shot from the floor to fall for UNA.
 
The lead changed hands two more times down the stretch. Delta State's Becca Ruckes answered with a basket and free throw at the other end to give the visitors a 57-56 lead. Lyde then gave the Lions a one-point advantage with two free throws with 2:43 remaining. UNA would not score again.
 
A jumper by Ruckes put DSU on top 59-58 before the Lions missed its final four shots from the floor and two from the free throw line. Chelsey Rhodes added a basket with 26 seconds left and Mary Carol Davis connected from the free throw line with less than a second remaining to seal the win.
 
Delta State led 29-26 at the half, but trailed throughout much of the third quarter. The Lions outscored DSU 20-14 in the period and held the lead until the game's closing minutes. The Lady Statesmen shot 45.5 percent from the floor and held a 35-29 advantage in rebounding.
 
North Alabama struggled from three-point range, connecting on only 4-of-13 attempts from outside the arc. Alexus Patterson led UNA with 16 points and nine rebounds. Lyde added 11 points, including a 7-for-9 showing from the free throw line.
 
Ruckes led Delta State (17-5 overall, 14-5 GSC) with a game-high 18 points.
 
UNA will host Union on Thursday. Tip-off is set for 6 p.m. at Flowers Hall.
