UNA WOMEN FALL SHORT AGAINST NO. 11 UNION

FLORENCE – North Alabama's 11 three-point baskets was not enough to pull off the upset against No. 11 Union Thursday evening in an 80-67 home loss. The Bulldogs rallied from a 33-28 deficit at the half to post the win and clinch the top seed in the upcoming Gulf South Conference Tournament. With the loss, UNA falls to 5-20 overall and 4-16 in GSC play.

Four players reached double figures in scoring for the Lions, who led throughout the game until the closing minutes of the third quarter. With the score tied at 51-51, Union closed the period on a 10-3 run to grab the lead for good.

In the fourth quarter, UNA could get no closer than four. A basket by KeKe Gunter with 4:40 remaining cut the lead to 69-65. The Bulldogs responded with a three-pointer by Kelsey Risner, which started an 8-0 run to push the lead to double digits.

North Alabama stayed within striking distance by connecting on 11-of-29 attempts from three-point range. Jaclyn Heath was 4-of-7 from long range and finished with 14 points. Katelyn Nunley led the Lions with 18 points on the night. Gunter also had 14, while Janae Lyde rounded out the top scorers for UNA with 11 points.

After hitting just 11-of-34 shots from the floor in the first half, Union shot a blistering 73.9 percent over the final 20 minutes of play. The Bulldogs also made seven of their nine three-point baskets in the second half. Jada Perkins led Union (24-2 overall, 18-2 GSC) with a game-high 23 points.

UNA will host Christian Brothers on Saturday to close out the home portion of the regular season. Tip-off is set for 1 p.m. at Flowers Hall.
