SOFTBALL GETS TWO WINS OVER WEST GEORGIA

FLORENCE – A pair of home wins over West Georgia on Friday gave the University of North Alabama softball team a 17-2 record on the season. The 5-1, 7-4 double-header sweep over the Wolves also gave UNA a 4-1 mark in Gulf South Conference play with the two teams set for a series finale on Saturday.

The Lions totaled 18 hits on the day, handing the first losses of the season to each of the UWG starting pitchers. A four-run fourth inning paved the way for the victory in the first game while a quick start helped UNA maintain the lead throughout the nightcap.

After West Georgia broke a scoreless tie with a single run in the top of the fourth inning of the opener, UNA sent nine batters to the plate in the bottom of the frame. An RBI-single by Anna Gayle Norris tied the game at 1-1 before a two-run single by Mackenzie Roberts gave the Lions the lead for good. Reagan Tittle wrapped up the scoring in the inning with a sacrifice fly that scored Amy Carden from third base.

In the bottom of the fifth, pinch-runner Destiny Wright reached third base before Carden drew a bases-loaded walk to bring in another run.

West Georgia was unable to get a hit over the final two innings as Hillary Carpenter recorded the pitching victory. The junior from Hatton scattered six hits and struck out four to improve to 7-1 on the season. At the plate, the Lions had five players with one hit each.

North Alabama jumped out to a fast start and never looked back in the second game. The Lions plated runs in each of the first four innings, including a three-run first. Tittle and Bailey Nelson each went 3-for-4 with an RBI as UNA pounded out 13 hits. Brooklynn Clark and Courtney Shields also each doubled and finished the game 2-for-4, giving the top four hitters of the UNA lineup 10 hits in the outing.

Raven Cole (9-1) got the win in the circle. She allowed four runs off seven hits with seven walks and four strikeouts.

West Georgia (10-3 overall, 2-3 GSC) was led by Katie Spinks, who went 4-for-8 on the day. Game 3 of the series will be at Noon on Saturday at the UNA Softball Complex at Cox Creek Park.
