MEN’S TENNIS TEAM KNOCKS OFF CHATTANOOGA 4-2

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn., – After rainy conditions moved the match indoors and forced the cancellation of doubles play, the University of North Alabama men's tennis team knocked off Chattanooga 4-2 on Saturday. The road win against the NCAA Division I Mocs evened UNA's record at 2-2 on the season.

"We had to face a little adversity today and I thought the guys handled it well," said UNA head tennis coach Brice Bishop. "We talk all the time about handling adversity and we did that today. From outside, to inside, to starting singles, we handled whatever was thrown at us."

The match was scheduled to be played outside at the Champions Club in Chattanooga, but was moved inside because of wet courts. Playing at the Manker Patton Tennis Center, the coaches decided to start with singles play.

Guillaume Dechoz put the Lions out front early with a 7-6, 6-2 win at No. 1 singles. Facing two set points in the first set, the senior won four straight points to close out the set.

Chattanooga was able to tie the match at 1-1 with a win at No. 3 singles before Javier Cordero again gave the Lions a lead. The sophomore came from behind at No. 6 singles, rallying for a 4-6, 6-3, 6-3 victory. After the Mocs again tied the match at 2-2 with a three set win at No. 2 singles, sophomore Taylor Ausbon got UNA back in front with a 6-3, 6-4 win at No. 5 singles.

No. 4 singles was the last match to finish. After a 6-4 loss, Max Druppel forced a deciding set with a 6-3 victory. The junior raced out to a 4-1 lead before the Mocs dug in. Leading 4-3, Druppel closed out the set winning eight out of the last 10 points to secure the match for the Lions.

"What an effort by all the guys," added Bishop.  We had chances to win the two matches we lost.  I love how physical we played today."

The Lions will return to Gulf South Conference play on Thursday at Christian Brothers. Match time is set for 1 p.m. on the CBU campus in Memphis, Tenn.
