SOFTBALL COMPLETES SWEEP AT SHORTER WITH 7-5 WIN

ROME, Ga., – The University of North Alabama softball team overcame an early 3-0 deficit, then held off a late rally by Shorter to pick up a 7-5 Gulf South Conference road win on Sunday. The victory completes a three-game sweep over the Hawks and gives UNA a 21-4 overall record with a 7-2 mark in GSC play.

Shorter was able to take the early lead after scoring two runs in the bottom of the first inning and adding another run in the second. The Lions, however, responded with six unanswered runs, including a three-run third inning.

A double by Madeline Lee and a walk by Bailey Nelson started the frame. Both scored on an RBI-double by Courtney Shields. After reaching third base, Shields later scored on a sacrifice fly by Brooklynn Clark to tie the game at 3-3.

The game remained tied until the top of the fifth inning. With two on and one out, Clark connected on a three-run homerun to left center, giving UNA the lead for good. Shorter answered with two runs in the bottom of the fifth to make the score 6-5, but could get no closer. Lee gave the Lions an insurance run with a solo homer down the left line in the top of the sixth inning.

Hillary Carpenter came on in relief to get the pitching victory. The second win of the series gives the junior from Hatton a 9-2 record on the season. On Sunday, she allowed two runs off two hits with four strikeouts in five innings of work. Freshman Hannah Bodenhorn pitched the first two innings to get the no decision.

At the plate, Shields, Clark, Lee and Mackenzie Roberts each went 2-for-3. Clark added four RBI and a run scored.

UNA will return home for its next GSC series next weekend against West Florida. The two teams will play a double-header beginning at 2 p.m. on Saturday. The series will conclude with a single game at 1 p.m. the following day.
