LIONS SPLIT FINAL DAY OF GULF COAST INVITATIONAL

GULF SHORES – After suffering its first loss of the season in a 5-0 setback against Young Harris, the University of North Alabama softball team rebounded to post an 8-3 win over Simon Fraser on Sunday to wrap up play at the Gulf Coast Invitational. The split on the final day gives the Lions a 6-1 record at the event and an 11-1 overall mark.

In the opener, Young Harris scored five runs over the first three innings and kept the Lions from crossing home plate for the first time this season. Darby Stanford got the complete-game shutout our for the Mountain Lions. UNA got nine hits in the game, but stranded 11 base runners to suffer its first loss of the season.

YHC was able to get to UNA starter Raven Cole (6-1) early, getting lead-off walks in each of the first three innings. The Mountain Lions also took advantage of two wild pitches and a passed ball to grab the early lead. Cole finished the game with four hits in three innings. She also struck out two and allowed five earned runs. Hannah Bodenhorn came in to pitch the final four scoreless innings, allowing just two hits.

Brooklynn Clark was 3-for-3 but was left on base each time. Amy Carden and Reagan Tittle also added two hits each.

Against Simon Fraser, Harlie Barkley was 3-for-4 at the plate while Courtney Shields had two hits and drove in two runs. Hillary Carpenter also scattered three hits and took a shutout into the sixth inning to get the win in the circle.

UNA broke a scoreless tie in the top of the fourth inning. After Shields led off the inning with a single, she stole second base and reached third on a ground out by Clark. An RBI-single by Danielle Cruickshank then drove her home and gave the Lions the early 1-0 lead. Cruickshank stole second before reaching third base on a wild pitch. She put UNA ahead 2-0 when she scored on a passed ball.

A four-run fifth inning gave North Alabama a 6-0 lead. Barkley led off the frame with a double and later scored on a two-run single by Clark. Anna Gayle Norris also drove in two runs with a single to left field.

The Lions briefly extended their lead to 8-0 with a two-run double by Shields in the top of the sixth. Simon Fraser, however, avoided the mercy-rule defeat with a solo homerun in the bottom of the frame. SFU loaded the bases with one out in the bottom of the sixth, but could only add two runs. Carpenter struck out five batters and improved to 4-0 on the year.

UNA will now turn its attention to Gulf South Conference play. The Lions will host No. 6 Valdosta State for a three-game series next weekend. The two teams will play a double-header Saturday beginning at 2 p.m., followed by a single game at 1 p.m. the next day.
