LIONS DOWN UWA 17-5 FOR 15TH STRAIGHT WIN

LIVINGSTON – The University of North Alabama softball team scored all 17 runs over a three-inning stretch Sunday in a 17-5 five-inning win at West Alabama. The 15th consecutive victory gives the No. 6 Lions a 32-4 record on the season with a 16-2 mark in Gulf South Conference play.

The win, along with a Delta State loss on the same day also puts UNA in a tie for first place in the GSC standings. The Lions will host DSU in a key GSC series next weekend.

On Sunday, the UNA bats continued to stay hot with a season-high 19 hits. Six different players had multiple hits on the day, including Courtney Shields, who went 4-for-5 with two RBI. For the game, the Lions hit four homeruns in the third, fourth and fifth innings to finish the three-game sweep with another mercy-rule win.

The Lions got things going in the top of the third inning. After entering the frame trailing 1-0, UNA erupted for six runs off five hits to take control. A three-run homerun by Brooklynn Clark started the scoring. Harlie Barkley also singled and scored on an error before Madeline Lee connected on a two-run homer to left field to give UNA a 6-1 lead.

West Alabama answered with three runs in the bottom of the third to cut the lead to 6-4 and prompt a pitching change for the Lions. Hillary Carpenter (16-2) replaced starter Hannah Bodenhorn and pitched the final 2.2 innings to get the win for UNA. She allowed a single hit and an unearned run. Bodenhorn struck out four and allowed four hits in 2.1 innings.

With the lead cut to 6-4, North Alabama added five runs in the top of the fourth inning. An RBI-double by Shields and an RBI-single by Clark made the score 8-4 before Anna Gayle Norris connected on a two-run homer to left center. An RBI-single by Shelby Woodard then gave UNA an 11-4 lead.

After the Tigers scored a single run in the bottom of the fourth, UNA plated six more runs in the top of the fifth to seal the win. The Lions started the inning with three straight hits and sent a total of 11 batters to the plate in the frame.

Tittle and Clark drove in runs before a sacrifice fly by Lee made the score 14-5. Freshman Mackenzie Roberts then connected on a two-run homerun to left field. Shields' fourth double of the day drove in the game's final run.

The series against Delta State will begin Friday with a double-header set to begin at 2 p.m. The two teams will play a single game at 1 p.m. on Saturday.
