BASEBALL LIONS COMPLETE SWEEP OF CHOCTAWS

FLORENCE, Ala. – Davis Elliott got a leadoff double in the bottom of the 11th inning and then scored on an RBI-single by Heath Wood as the University of North Alabama downed Mississippi College 5-4 to complete a three-game sweep of the Choctaws at Mike Lane Field.

UNA held a 4-1 lead in the ninth inning before the Choctaws scored three runs on two hits, a walk and an error to tie the game. The Lions then pushed across the game-winner in the 11th to improve to 19-17 overall and 11-13 in the GSC. Mississippi College falls to 12-23 and 5-18.

UNA starter Todd Gibson came within one out of a complete-game win but was forced from the game with two outs and two runners on base in the ninth with the Lions leading 4-2. Another run scored on a wild pitch by reliever Blake Talley and the tying run scored on a single by Hunter Hall off Talley to force extra innings. Talley (3-2) got the win, allowing no runs on two hits with three strikeouts in two and a third innings. Gibson pitched eight and two-thirds innings and gave up four runs on eight hits. He walked four and struckout four.

Senior Dylan Calhoun saw his 20-game hitting streak come to an end after going 0-for-4 in the game but he was hit-by-pitch to extend his streak of having reached base to 28 consecutive games. Calhoun also had a successful bunt in the 11th to help push Davis to third base.

UNA took a 3-0 lead in the second inning when Kyle Hubbuch reached on catcher's interference and Peyton Sockwell and Kyle Crabtree reached on fielder's choices. Jess Smith drove in the first run with an RBI-groundout and Elliott followed with a two-run double down the leftfield line.

The Choctaws got a solo home run in the third from Hunter Hall to make it 3-1.

The Lions got the run back in the fourth when Crabtree walked, stole second and scored on a Wood single.

North Alabama will play at Montevallo Wednesday in a single game at 5 p.m.
