SOFTBALL TEAM DOWNS UNION 10-0 TO FINISH SWEEP

FLORENCE – Hillary Carpenter and Hannah Bodenhorn combined for a one-hit shutout and the University of North Alabama softball team scored 10 runs in a 10-0 five-inning victory over Union Sunday at home. The win caps a three-game sweep over the Bulldogs that saw UNA outscore the visitors 30-0 in three straight mercy-rule victories.

With the win, the Lions improve to 43-5 on the season with a 27-3 record in Gulf South Conference play. UNA has also posted 18 victories via the eight-run mercy rule.

Against Union, Harlie Barkley did most of the damage at the plate. The senior from Florence went 2-for-3 with four RBI. She had an RBI-double in the first inning and a three-run triple in the fourth. For the day, the Lions totaled nine hits, including five that went for extra bases.

Bailey Nelson scored first to give UNA the early lead in the bottom of the first inning. After drawing a leadoff walk, she reached third before scoring on a sacrifice fly by Reagan Tittle. Barkley then drove in Tittle with a two-out double to left center to give the Lions a 2-0 lead.

In the second inning, UNA had runners at second and third with two outs when Courtney Shields ripped a triple into right center to drive in two runs. She also crossed home plate on an RBI-single by Tittle to make the score 5-0.

After a scoreless third inning, North Alabama doubled its lead with five runs in the bottom of the fourth. The Lions sent nine batters to the plate and had the bases loaded with two outs when Barkley came to the plate. She connected on a triple to left center to drive in three runs. Back-to-back doubles by Danya Snead and Madeline Lee brought home two more runs to account for the final score.

Lee also had two hits on the day, going 2-for-2 with a single, a double and an RBI.

Carpenter improved to 20-3 with the pitching victory after working the first three innings. She struck out two and allowed only one hit. Bodenhorn tossed the final two shutout innings without yielding a hit.

UNA will close out the regular season with a three-game series at Christian Brothers next weekend. The two teams will play a double-header Saturday at noon before closing out with a single game at the same time the next day.
