VOLLEYBALL OPENS UINDY INVITE WITH TWO WINS

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind., – The University of North Alabama volleyball team posted an impressive start to the 2016 UIndy Invitational on Friday with a pair of 3-0 victories over West Texas A&M and Truman State. The two wins give the Lions a 6-0 start to the season.
 
UNA defeated West Texas A&M 25-14, 25-8, 25-20 before knocking off Truman 25-20, 25-16, 26-24. Natasha Fomina had 23 kills on the day while setter Jayden Davila-McClary notched 57 assists.
 
In the opener, UNA jumped out to double-digit leads in each of the first two contests before holding on for a five-point victory in the third set. The Lions hit .391 for the match, including a .600 showing in the second set.
 
Fomina hit .545 and had 13 kills. Davila-McClary recorded 30 assists while Ashtyn Kapovich added 15 digs.
 
The second match of the day featured a familiar script as the Lions recorded a pair of dominant victories before completing the three-game sweep with a close win. Balance was a key factor as UNA had four different players with at least five kills and three different players with at least 14 digs.
 
Fomina again led the way with 10 kills. Peyton Lang added seven kills, while Ana Gabriela Pacheco produced six kills for the Lions. Davila-McClary paced the offense with 27 assists.
 
Defensively, Kapovich and Sarah Ann Tillery each turned in 17 digs while Lang also reached double figures in the category with 14 digs.
 
UNA will be back in action at the event on Saturday. The Lions will take on Ashland at Noon and Saginaw Valley at 6 p.m. Both times are Eastern.
