LIONS DROP FIVE-SET THRILLER AT WEST FLORIDA

PENSACOLA, Fla., – No. 23 West Florida overcame a 2-1 deficit in the match and a 14-13 match-point deficit in the fifth set to rally for a 3-2 win over North Alabama Tuesday evening at the UWF Field House. The 25-20, 18-25, 25-22, 20-25, 14-16 defeat gives UNA a 16-4 record on the season. The NCAA South Region match does not count in the Gulf South Conference standings.
 
Lexie Bradley had 24 kills and 20 digs to lead the Lions. The senior from Florence continues to lead the GSC in total kills and kills per set.
 
In the opening set against the Argonauts, UNA trailed 12-11 before using a 6-2 run to take the lead for good. The Lions led by as many as six before a service ace by Bradley ended the frame.
 
West Florida (16-4) responded with a .314 team hitting percentage in the second set. The Lions held an early 3-2 lead before the home team took control. Rachel Neblett had five of her 11 kills as the Argos evened the match.
 
A balanced scoring attack helped UNA regain the lead in the third set. Bradley, Jessica Austin, Ana Gabriela Pacheco and Genny Cruz combined for 14 kills in the victory.
 
UWF pulled away late to avoid the loss in the fourth set. Holding a 17-15 lead, the Argos outscored UNA 8-5 down the stretch to set up the final game.
 
The home team appeared to be in control in the fifth set before the Lions rallied. Trailing 12-7, North Alabama fought back to tie the sore at 13-13. An ace by Jayden Davila-McClary then gave UNA a match point at 14-13. West Florida, however got a kill by Nadine Willams to tie the score before back-to-back blocks ended the match.
 
Austin added 18 kills and four blocks for the Lions while Pacheco turned in a career-high 13 kills. Davila-McClary added 54 assists and 17 digs. Ashtyn Kapovich also had 20 digs while Ava Carnley recorded 17 digs on the night.
 
UNA will now turn its attention to the GSC/SSS South Region Crossover Oct. 13-14 at the Finley Center in Hoover. The Lions will take on Saint Leo Friday at 4:45 p.m. before having Saturday matchups against Barry (12:15 p.m.) and Florida Southern (7 p.m.).
