SAINT LEO HOLDS ON TO TOP UNA MEN 82-77

TAMPA, Fla., – Saint Leo took a 47-39 lead into the half and maintained the advantage over the final 20 minutes of play to record an 82-77 win over the University of North Alabama men's basketball team on Sunday. The loss leaves UNA with an 0-2 start to the 2017-18 season in a pair of close games at the GSC/SSC Challenge in Tampa.
 
SLU opened the game on a 20-9 run and shot 64.3 percent from the field in the first half. The Lions responded with a 13-2 run of their own to tie the game. A three-point basket by Kendarius Smith knotted the score at 22-22 and neither team led by more than four points until the final 2:19 of the period.
 
After a jumper by Smith gave North Alabama a 35-34 lead with 3:42 remaining, SLU closed the half on a 13-4 run. The Lions were 2-for-8 from the floor down the stretch.
 
In the second half, Saint Leo led by as many as 12, but could not pull away until the closing seconds. The Lions got within three points on four different occasions, including a basket by Tavaras Tolliver to make the score 77-74 with 55 seconds to play.
 
SLU responded with a basket by DeAndre King to regain a five-point lead. Tolliver drew a foul and hit one of two free throws on the other end to make the score 79-75 with 19 seconds to play. The Lions then forced a turnover on the ensuing inbounds pass but could not convert.
 
Two more Saint Leo free throws extended the lead to 81-75 with 10 seconds remaining.  UNA got a basket by Jeff Hodge but ran out of time after SLU added one more free throw.
 
UNA finished the game shooting 50 percent from the floor. The Lions also held a 33-30 rebounding advantage over SLU.
 
Sharwyn McGee led five UNA players in double figures with a career-high 20 points. Kendall Stafford added 14 points while Tolliver tossed in 11 points on the day. Smith and Trenton Clayton also scored 10 points each.
 
King led Saint Leo (1-1) with 20 points.
 
UNA will now turn its attention to its home opener on Thursday, Nov. 16. The Lions are set for a 6 p.m. tip-off against Oakwood at Flowers Hall.
